Heading into this weekend, Kimi Antonelli leads the championship by 41 points, despite a painful DNF in the closing laps of the Barcelona-Catalunya GP from P2. Lewis Hamilton’s win moved him 25 points closer, with George Russell getting back to within 50 of his teammate after taking 2nd.
Charles Leclerc also had a late DNF, leaving him a distant P4 in the standings. Lando Norris’ excellent podium meant he was only two points away from the Monegasque. Oscar Piastri was a further five back following a difficult weekend at the Circuit de Catalunya.
On the Constructors’ side, Mercedes hold a 72-point lead over Scuderia Ferrari. McLaren were a solid P3, with Red Bull a distant 4th.
Points leader Kimi Antonelli was quickest in FP1, leading George Russell, Oscar Piastri, Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton. Dino Beganovic was the fastest of the rookies, although that is to be expected as he was in the Ferrari. Jak Crawford was also impressive, outpacing Fernando Alonso by a tenth of a second.
A number of full-time drivers returned in this session. Charles Leclerc, Carlos Sainz, Lance Stroll, Gabriel Bortoleto, Esteban Ocon and Liam Lawson got back in their respective machinery.
