The starting grid was led by a surprising Alpine. Pierre Gasly sat in P1 after winning his maiden pole on Saturday Qualifying. Behind him, Russell, Leclerc, Hamilton, Verstappen, Piastri, Colapinto, Norris, Lindblad, and Bortoleto completed the top 10
The lights went out, and Gasly held out for the win, but Russell overtook him on lap 2. The race came to a sudden stop as Charles Leclerc spun onto the gravel. It was heartbreak for the Ferrari driver in front of the tifosi. He lost the car in the Parabolica, with no chance to correct the rear. After the red flag, the new starting grid was led by Russell, Gasly, Verstappen, Colapinto and Piastri for a standing start.
Gasly fell down the order to P6. While Colapinto, who had reached P3, went off to the gravel and fell to P14. Verstappen stole the lead from Russell on lap 12. Anontelli, having started P19, followed closely behind as he moved up to P3 and quickly joined the fight up front. On lap 18, the young Italian made his home fans roar as he stole the lead.
After stopping in a VSC, Antonelli and Verstappen fell back, but quickly climbed up on fresh tyres. The young Mercedes driver hunted down his teammate. With 5 laps to go, Antonelli tried to overtake, but went off into the gravel. Finally, on lap 53, Kimi Antonelli got back to P1.
