Except for a sole practice session, topped by George Russell, Max Verstappen has dominated so far. The Red Bull driver qualified P1 in the Sprint Qualifying and converted to a win in the Sprint Race. The Mercedes Brit had stolen the lead at the start of the short race, but was suddenly out as he crashed and spun into the track on the start/finish straight.
Russell will not have it easy on Sunday, as he is set to start from the back of the grid after taking a PU penalty. Car number 63 was forced to replace engine parts after his retirement at the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia.
As cars rolled out to the Marina Bay Street Circuit in Q1, teams faced different issues. While Ocon and Stroll went wide, barely missing the wall, Hadjar stopped on track due to engine issues. By the end of the first session, Alonso, Albon, Stroll, Perez, Bottas, and Hadjar were knocked out. The final 6 eliminated in Q2 were Hulkenberg, Bearman, Ocon, Sainz, Bortoleto, and Colapinto.
The pole seemed set to be disputed between Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton. By the end of Q3, Verstappen stayed up at the front, while Leclerc stole P2 from his teammate.
