Freddie Slater drew level with Ugo Ugochukwu at the top of the 2026 F3 Drivers’ Championship after finishing second in the Barcelona-Catalunya Sprint Race.

While Slater added nine points to his total, Ugochukwu failed to score after spinning into the gravel at Turn 3. James Wharton, meanwhile, secured his first victory of the season and climbed into 12th place, while PREMA Racing more than doubled its Teams’ Championship total.

Slater joins Ugochukwu at the top

Ugochukwu entered the Barcelona weekend as the sole Championship leader after scoring strongly during the opening rounds in Melbourne and Monaco.

However, the Campos Racing driver’s Sprint Race ended after he attempted a switchback on Enzo Deligny and spun into the gravel at Turn 3. The incident brought out the second Safety Car and left Ugochukwu without points for the first time since the Melbourne Sprint Race.

Slater took full advantage of his rival’s retirement. The Trident driver started third, briefly moved ahead of Wharton during the opening phase and eventually finished second after applying pressure to the PREMA driver through both Safety Car restarts.

His nine-point haul moved him onto 43 points, level with Ugochukwu. Nevertheless, Ugochukwu retained first place in the standings on countback after winning the Melbourne Feature Race.

Del Pino remains firmly in title contention

Bruno Del Pino retained third place in the Championship after finishing sixth for Van Amersfoort Racing.

The Spaniard added five points and moved to 40, leaving him only three behind Ugochukwu and Slater. Therefore, the leading three drivers remained separated by a narrow margin ahead of Sunday’s Feature Race.

Del Pino’s team-mates also strengthened their Championship positions. Enzo Deligny collected six points for fifth and moved into seventh with 18, while Hiyu Yamakoshi scored his first four points of the campaign after finishing seventh.

Badoer retains fourth after restored points finish

Brando Badoer remained fourth in the standings and moved onto 29 points after the Stewards restored him to 10th place.

The Rodin Motorsport driver initially received a 10-second penalty for contact with Ernesto Rivera. However, the Stewards rescinded that sanction following a Right of Review after Campos Racing confirmed that an electrical failure had caused Rivera to lose power suddenly. Badoer consequently regained the final point.

Badoer now sits four points clear of Théophile Naël, who added three points with eighth place. Naël remained fifth on 25 points before starting Sunday’s Feature Race from pole position.

Xie moves into the Championship top six

Gerrard Xie converted reverse-grid pole into third place after leading the opening four laps.

Wharton passed the DAMS Lucas Oil driver for first at Turn 1 on lap five. Xie then resisted Tuukka Taponen’s late challenge to complete the podium and collect eight points.

The result lifted Xie to sixth in the standings with 20 points. He moved ahead of Deligny, Taito Kato and Pedro Clerot, although those three drivers remained within four points of him.

Wharton makes major gain with maiden victory

Wharton produced the largest gain among the leading drivers after entering the race without a point.

The Australian recovered after losing momentum at the start, reclaimed second from Slater and then passed Xie for the lead. He controlled both restarts and set the fastest lap before claiming victory by 1.044 seconds.

Wharton earned 10 points for the victory and one for the fastest lap. As a result, he climbed to 12th in the standings with 11 points, only two behind Alessandro Giusti and Maciej Gładysz.

Taponen also made a significant move after finishing fourth. The MP Motorsport driver scored his first seven points of the season and climbed to 15th, while Louis Sharp’s ninth-place result placed him 19th with two points.

Campos retains control of the Teams’ Championship

Despite Ugochukwu’s retirement, Campos Racing remained comfortably ahead in the Teams’ Championship.

Naël’s three points increased the team’s total to 78, giving Campos a 16-point advantage over Van Amersfoort Racing. The Dutch outfit enjoyed the strongest collective result after Deligny, Del Pino and Yamakoshi finished fifth, sixth and seventh, adding 15 points to its total.

Trident remained third after Slater supplied all nine of its points from the Sprint Race. Rodin Motorsport followed in fourth on 45 points after Badoer regained his single point through the Right of Review.

Meanwhile, Wharton and Sharp combined to score 13 points for PREMA Racing. The result more than doubled the team’s total from one point to 14, although PREMA remained eighth behind DAMS Lucas Oil.

Barcelona Feature Race offers another Championship swing

The Sprint Race brought Slater level with Ugochukwu and placed three drivers within three points at the front of the standings.

However, the Feature Race offers more points and will place the leading title contenders in very different starting positions. Naël will start from pole alongside Ugochukwu, while Del Pino begins eighth and Slater lines up further back after qualifying outside the leading positions.

Therefore, the Barcelona round could still reshape both Championships considerably before the field leaves Spain.
