Porsche Formula E Team’s Pascal Wehrlein converted pole position into victory after a rain-affected Formula E Shanghai E-Prix Race 1 shaped by Pit Boost, Attack Mode timing and a late Safety Car, which affected final results.

Andretti Formula E Team’s Jake Dennis briefly led during the opening phase, while Jaguar TCS Racing’s António Félix da Costa charged into victory contention as conditions worsened. However, Wehrlein managed the changing track surface, retained the net lead through the Pit Boost cycle and controlled the restart to win ahead of da Costa and Dennis.

Wehrlein masters rain and Safety Car drama to win from pole

Porsche Formula E Team’s Pascal Wehrlein made the perfect start from pole and controlled the opening metres, but Andretti Formula E Team’s Jake Dennis immediately raised the pressure by passing Jaguar TCS Racing’s Mitch Evans for second. Further back, Nissan Formula E Team’s Norman Nato and Lola Yamaha ABT Formula E Team’s Zane Maloney served 10-second stop-and-go penalties, while DS Penske’s Taylor Barnard dropped to the rear after a puncture.

Rain began to affect the race by Lap 6, and the order quickly changed. Dennis took the lead, but Jaguar TCS Racing’s António Félix da Costa charged through the pack and moved into second after overtaking Wehrlein. As conditions worsened, Wehrlein fought back and reclaimed the lead, while Race Control issued black-and-white flags to Envision Racing’s Sébastien Buemi and Andretti Formula E Team’s Felipe Drugovich.

The Pit Boost window opened on Lap 13, with Drugovich stopping first before Buemi, Lola Yamaha ABT Formula E Team’s Lucas di Grassi, Mahindra Racing’s Edoardo Mortara, Wehrlein, da Costa, Nissan Formula E Team’s Oliver Rowland and Maloney followed. DS Penske’s Maximilian Günther and Porsche Formula E Team’s Nico Müller completed later stops, which briefly handed Citroën Racing’s Jean-Éric Vergne the on-track lead. However, Wehrlein retained the net advantage.

Race Control declared a wet track on Lap 19, before Cupra Kiro’s Dan Ticktum and Nato switched to wet tyres. Heavy rain then triggered a Safety Car on Lap 20 and hurt several Attack Mode strategies, including Mortara, Cupra Kiro’s Pepe Martí, Ticktum and Citroën Racing’s Nick Cassidy. Envision Racing’s Joel Eriksson used late Attack Mode to gain ground after the restart. However, Wehrlein managed the final laps cleanly and beat da Costa, while Dennis completed the podium.
