2026 Italian F4 | Round 6: Misano | Sammalisto seals title as Costoya completes hat-trick

Luka Sammalisto secured the 2026 Italian F4 Championship at Misano as Christian Costoya transformed his season with a remarkable hat-trick of victories across the penultimate round.

Sammalisto arrived at the Misano World Circuit with 374 points and a 99-point advantage after strengthening his position at Imola. The US Racing driver faced his first opportunity to clinch the title, although a difficult wet qualifying session complicated his weekend. Nevertheless, his recovery from 24th to 12th in Race 3 supplied the final points he needed to mathematically secure the championship.

While Sammalisto completed his title campaign, Costoya dominated the sporting story at the front. The PREMA Racing Rookie claimed his maiden Italian F4 victory after dramatic final-lap contact eliminated the Race 2 leaders, before he controlled Race 3 and the Final. Because the rotating group system kept him out of Race 1, Costoya won all three races he contested at Misano. Ary Bansal claimed the remaining victory for US Racing.

The Rookie Championship also changed direction again as Alp Aksoy moved back ahead of Kenzo Craigie, while Emma Felbermayr retained her 26-point advantage over Payton Westcott in the Women’s Trophy. US Racing completed its title celebrations by mathematically securing the Teams’ Championship, leaving the Rookie and Women’s contests as the principal titles still open ahead of the Mugello finale.

The Misano event featured 47 verified drivers and therefore continued to use the championship’s group format. Organisers divided the field into two series for practice and qualifying before forming three groups for the preliminary races. Each driver contested two of the first three races, with the strongest 36 progressing to the Final.

Sammalisto immediately placed himself at the front when the first half of the field began Friday running. The championship leader recorded a 1:37.133 to finish 0.254s ahead of teammate Bansal, while Costoya placed third for PREMA.

Craigie followed only 0.310s from the benchmark, while Lyuboslav Ruykov completed the top five. Elia Weiss, Ludovico Busso, Thomas Bearman, Oscar Repetto and Arjen Kräling rounded out the top 10.

Robinson then produced the fastest time across the opening sessions when the second series took to the circuit. The US Racing driver set a 1:36.882 and beat Cosma-Cristofor by only 0.063s, while Alex Ruta followed another 0.021s behind.

Dean Pedersen placed fourth on his latest appearance for CRAM Motorsport, with Oleksandr Savinkov completing the top five. Aksoy followed in sixth ahead of Andy Consani, Teo Borenstein, David Walther and Roman Kamyab.

Bearman and Ruta take over in wet Free Practice 2

Conditions changed dramatically before the second practice running as heavy rain soaked Misano. The additional standing water and spray substantially increased lap times and gave the field valuable preparation for the wet qualifying sessions that followed later in the day.

Bearman adapted quickest in the first series and recorded a 1:57.671. Killion followed 0.651s behind, while Bernoldi took third ahead of Rodriguez and Kräling. Two Red Flags interrupted the session, including a late stoppage after Fogaça stopped on circuit.

The second series found slightly better conditions, allowing Ruta to lower the overall benchmark to 1:55.343. Hattemer finished 0.653s behind for Trident Motorsport, while Al Sulaiti took third. 2026 Italian F4: Misano: Qualifying: Bansal and Borenstein claim maiden poles

Rain continued to shape qualifying, where Bansal and Costoya fought closely for the top of Series 1. Bearman initially set a competitive pace before Bansal broke beneath the 1:55 barrier and established himself as the driver to beat.

Costoya briefly threatened the US Racing driver, but Bansal ultimately produced a 1:54.653 to take his maiden Italian F4 pole by only 0.047s. Bearman finished third ahead of Killion and Weiss, while Busso and Craigie followed in sixth and seventh.

Borenstein went even faster in Series 2. The Jenzer Motorsport driver repeatedly lowered the benchmark and eventually recorded a 1:54.172, giving him the quickest qualifying time of the afternoon and his first Italian F4 pole.

Hattemer followed 0.497s behind, with Aksoy third for PREMA. Robinson and Burnett completed the top five, while Pedersen, Toniolo, Simek, Walther and Zheng rounded out the leading 10.

2026 Italian F4: Misano: Race 1: Bansal converts pole into victory

Bansal converted his first pole position into his second victory of the season when Groups B and C opened Saturday’s race programme.

The Indian driver retained first at the start, while Aksoy moved into second and Busso established himself in the podium positions. Behind them, several incidents complicated the opening laps before Fogaça’s stranded car eventually triggered a Safety Car.

Bansal controlled the restart and kept Aksoy behind for the remainder of the 15-lap contest. Busso completed an all-important third place for US Racing, while Walther and Ruta finished fourth and fifth. Savinkov followed in sixth ahead of Martinese, Arn, Al Sulaiti and Killion.

Stewards later applied five time penalties, but Bansal, Aksoy and Busso retained the podium. Aksoy also claimed the Rookie victory, while Sammalisto recovered to 12th after a difficult race and kept his championship-clinching opportunity alive for Sunday.

2026 Italian F4: Misano: Race 2: Costoya claims maiden win after final-lap drama

Race 2 produced the defining drama of Saturday as Borenstein led from pole and controlled much of the Groups A-B contest. Bansal remained close throughout, while Costoya held third and Robinson gradually joined the battle.

The order finally erupted on the last lap. Bansal closed on Borenstein and attacked for first, while Costoya committed to the outside as the leading group compressed. Borenstein, Bansal and Robinson then became involved in contact, allowing Costoya to escape at the front and claim his maiden Italian F4 victory.

Craigie capitalised on the late incident to finish second, while Weiss initially crossed the line third. However, stewards added 25 seconds to Weiss’s time after ruling that he failed to slow sufficiently under double yellow flags. The penalty dropped him to 21st and promoted Aksoy onto the podium.

Toniolo therefore finished fourth ahead of Killion and Robinson, while Ruta took seventh. Pedersen, Cosma-Cristofor and Zheng completed the revised top 10. Costoya also secured the Rookie victory, with Craigie and Aksoy completing the class podium.

2026 Italian F4: Misano: Race 3: Costoya doubles up as Sammalisto seals title

Borenstein’s grid penalty moved Costoya onto pole for the Groups A-C contest on Sunday morning, and the PREMA Rookie immediately capitalised on the opportunity.

Costoya retained first and gradually established control, with Bearman holding second and Robinson third. An opening-lap Safety Car briefly interrupted the contest, but Costoya managed the restart and remained clear to take his second victory in succession. Bearman and Robinson completed the podium, while Weiss and Toniolo followed in fourth and fifth.

However, the championship story developed further back. Sammalisto started 24th after his difficult qualifying and needed only four more points to mathematically eliminate his remaining rivals. The Finn steadily climbed through the field and eventually reached 12th, giving US Racing its second Italian F4 drivers’ title after Kacper Sztuka’s 2023 success.

Costoya again won the Rookie category, with Toniolo second and Burnett third. Westcott led the Women’s Trophy runners, while Weiss recorded the fastest lap.

2026 Italian F4: Misano: Final: Costoya completes perfect hat-trick

Costoya’s performances across the preliminary races gave him pole for the 36-car Final, and the Spaniard immediately faced pressure from teammate Aksoy.

Aksoy attacked at the start but could not complete the move, allowing Costoya to establish himself at the front. Robinson also joined the fight for second, although neither driver could displace the PREMA pair as Costoya maintained control.

Several incidents interrupted the Final with Safety Cars, while newly crowned champion Sammalisto retired following contact with Pedersen. Westcott also failed to finish after an incident, which allowed Felbermayr to maximise the opportunity in the Women’s Trophy.

At the front, Costoya completed a perfect three wins from three starts at Misano. Aksoy followed 1.767s behind, with Robinson another 0.671s back in third. Killion and Ruta completed the top five.

Sporting checks subsequently changed several positions. Stewards gave Walther 10 seconds for contact with Bearman, while Bearman received five seconds for gaining an advantage off the circuit. They also added five seconds to Craigie’s time following his incident with Toniolo, dropping the R-ACE GP Rookie from sixth to seventh. ACI Sport subsequently published the revised official top 15.

Sammalisto entered Misano with 374 points and his first opportunity to secure the title. Although he endured his most difficult weekend of the season, his Race 1 points and Race 3 recovery moved his valid score to 386 and put the championship mathematically beyond his rivals.

Behind the champion, the battle for second remains exceptionally close. Aksoy now occupies second on 292 points under the championship’s best-16-results system, only seven ahead of Cosma-Cristofor on 285 and eight ahead of Bansal on 284. Craigie and Robinson sit level on 252, while Bearman follows on 215.

Costoya’s Misano hat-trick produces the largest movement further down the leading order. His three 30-point victories lift him to 164 valid points and 10th overall after he entered the weekend 17th on 104.

Aksoy regains Rookie Championship lead

Craigie arrived at Misano 15 points ahead of Aksoy after overturning the PREMA driver’s previous advantage at Imola. However, the momentum swung again almost immediately when Craigie retired from Race 1 and Aksoy claimed the class victory.

Craigie responded with second among the Rookies in Race 2 and remained competitive in the Final, but Aksoy’s consistent scoring allowed him to return to the top. The PREMA driver now holds 410 valid Rookie points, 14 ahead of Craigie on 396.

Costoya’s perfect Misano weekend also dramatically strengthens his position. Three Rookie victories add 90 points and move him to 332, while Hattemer sits fourth on 258 and Nielsen fifth on 257. Repetto, Toniolo, Arn, Simek and Martinese complete the current top 10.

Felbermayr retains Women’s Trophy advantage

Felbermayr and Westcott arrived at Misano separated by 26 points, and they leave the penultimate round with exactly the same margin.

Westcott gained ground during the preliminary races and beat Felbermayr in Race 3, but her Final retirement handed the PHM Racing driver another class victory. Felbermayr therefore increases her valid total to 376, while Westcott moves to 350.

Panzeri remains third on 220 ahead of Cotty on 216 and Ferreira on 204. Rosanne den Drijver holds sixth with 78, while Zoe Florescu completes the classification on 44.

US Racing secures Teams’ Championship

US Racing completed its Misano weekend with both major championships mathematically secured.

Bansal’s Race 1 victory, Robinson’s podiums and Sammalisto’s title-clinching points contributed to another strong haul, while PREMA responded through Costoya and Aksoy. Nevertheless, the remaining Mugello points cannot overturn the advantage under the championship’s valid-results system.

US Racing therefore leads with 1,066 valid points, while PREMA sits second on 890. R-ACE GP remains third on 397, only 18 clear of Van Amersfoort Racing. Jenzer Motorsport follows on 310 ahead of Trident Motorsport on 274.

Official Teams’ Championship standings after Misano

Penalty summary

Race 1 produced five post-race time penalties. Stewards added 25 seconds to Bearman and Pedersen, while Repetto, Kamyab and Simek each received 10 seconds. Those sanctions promoted Burnett, Orsini and Chartier into the final top 15 without changing the podium.

Race 2 then brought another significant revision. Stewards gave Weiss 25 seconds for failing to slow sufficiently under double yellow flags, moving him from third to 21st and promoting Aksoy onto the podium. Martinese received five seconds, Al Sulaiti 25 and Consani 10, while Borenstein, Ruykov and Orsini also received grid drops for Race 3.

Race 3 included a drive-through penalty and an additional five seconds for Lima, while stewards added 10 seconds to Anagnostidis. The Final then generated further changes as Walther received 10 seconds, Bearman five and Craigie five. Officials also issued future grid penalties to Zasov, Nielsen, Borenstein and Arn.

Conclusion: Sammalisto takes title as Costoya transforms season

Misano completed Sammalisto’s championship campaign with one round still remaining. The Finn did not reproduce the dominant form that had defined much of his season, but his ability to recover from a difficult qualifying session proved enough. By climbing from 24th to 12th in Race 3, he secured the points he needed and delivered US Racing its second Italian F4 drivers’ crown.

Costoya, meanwhile, produced the breakthrough weekend of his season. The PREMA Rookie arrived at Misano without an Italian F4 victory and left with three, winning every race he contested. His dramatic Race 2 breakthrough preceded more controlled performances in Race 3 and the Final, lifting him into the overall championship top 10 and strengthening his Rookie position.

Bansal claimed the remaining victory and remains firmly involved in the fight for championship runner-up, while Aksoy now occupies that position by only seven points from Cosma-Cristofor. Craigie and Robinson remain level further back, leaving several overall positions unresolved despite Sammalisto already securing the title.

The secondary championships will also keep the finale significant. Aksoy has regained the Rookie lead from Craigie, while Costoya’s Misano hat-trick has brought him considerably closer. Felbermayr continues to lead Westcott by 26 in the Women’s Trophy, whereas US Racing has already joined Sammalisto in securing its championship.

Italian F4 will conclude its 2026 campaign at Mugello from 30 October to 1 November. Sammalisto and US Racing will arrive with the principal championships already secured, but the fights for second overall, the Rookie crown and the Women’s Trophy remain open.
