After a challenging start to the 2026 F1 season, Williams’ Alex Albon clinched his maiden point of the season at the Miami GP. The Thai-British driver crossed the line in P10 at the Miami International Autodrome following a chaotic race. He now sits at P15 in the 2026 F1 Drivers’ Championship standings.

During the opening laps of the 2026 F1 Miami GP, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, who started in P2, had momentarily lost control of his car, resulting in a 360-degree spin. The Dutchman, who was battling for the lead with Charles Leclerc, spun under acceleration at Turn 2 but successfully got his car back under control, preventing any incidents.

While the four-time World Champion lost a significant number of places due to the incident, Albon used the situation to his advantage and climbed the order. The 30-year-old had started the 2026 F1 Miami GP in P15 but was P8 by the end of the opening tour.

“Honestly, the first two laps we stayed out of trouble. We were going forward. I think in total we must have made 6 or 7 positions on lap one. Great start.”

Albon then reflected on the season leading up to the 2026 F1 Miami GP and admitted that while he and teammate Carlos Sainz had good launches at lights out, he struggled a bit on race pace. Once Verstappen had come through the midfield, the Spaniard passed the Thai and eased away as the 57-lap contest went on.

We’ve had good starts this year, when everything’s been working. Both of us, Carlos and I, have had good starts.

“And then we kind of, to be honest with you, struggled a little bit at the race pace. I wasn’t the fastest car out there today. I think we know why for the most part, but we’ll look to it and come back stronger in Canada.”

Albon hopes to perform better in Montreal

The 2026 F1 Miami GP brings the first set of major upgrades from the majority of the grid, including Williams. On the basis of Miami, progress has been made.

Albon is looking forward to reviewing the data following the end of the 2026 F1 Miami GP and returning to the track for the Canadian GP much stronger.

Nonetheless, he is still pleased with the progress the team is making with their FW48 and is already looking forward to the next set of upgrades Williams will bring in the following weekends.

“I think, as you said, it was a great result for the team. That’s our first upgrade of the year. Hopefully, those bigger ones will come in the future, so good stuff.”
