Rowan Campbell-Pilling made an immediate impression on his GB3 Championship debut as the Xcel Motorsport driver emerged from the Silverstone season opener as the leading British contender.

The Sheffield-based racer delivered a composed and consistent weekend across the opening triple-header. He qualified sixth and seventh in his first GB3 Qualifying sessions, then converted that pace into three strong race results. As a result, he left Silverstone fifth in the early championship standings and firmly among the drivers to watch.

Qualifying pace sets the tone for GB3 Silverstone weekend

Campbell-Pilling began the weekend with a strong Qualifying display, placing himself inside the top seven for his first two starts in the category. That performance gave him a solid platform, and he took encouragement from the team’s early pace.

“We’ve started as we mean to go on” he said. “We were P6 and P7 in Qualifying, so that was a really good start. Speaking of starts, we need to sort those out.”

Although his Qualifying performance showed promise, the races also exposed an area for improvement. Campbell-Pilling gained ground at the start of Race 1, moving from sixth to fourth on the opening lap. However, he dropped from seventh to ninth at the beginning of race two, and he also slipped to ninth in the early stages of Race 3 after starting sixth.

Strong recovery drives secure top-seven run for Campbell-Pilling on GB3 debut weekend in Silverstone

Despite those setbacks, Campbell-Pilling kept his weekend on track. He fought back to finish fifth in Race 1, fifth again in Race 3 and seventh in the final contest.

Those results underlined his racecraft and maturity, particularly as he never allowed compromised starts to derail the weekend. Instead, he recovered positions, maintained pressure and banked valuable points.

“It’s something we need to work on behind the scenes a bit, as it’s a process issue for sure, and we need to fix that. Once we’re there, the race pace is there, everything else is there. We had two top-fives and a P7, we’ll take that all weekend long and we’ll see where we’re at in Spa.”

His comments show clear confidence in the underlying package. Moreover, they suggest that Xcel Motorsport and Campbell-Pilling have already identified the main area that could unlock even stronger results.

Consistency highlights race potential

Campbell-Pilling’s weekend impressed not only because of the finishing positions, but also because of the consistency behind them. In race one, he produced a particularly stable run before the safety car interrupted the rhythm. Over seven consecutive laps, he kept his times within just a couple of tenths of a second.

That metronomic pace gave him one of the clearest positives from the Silverstone opener. It also showed that he can sustain speed over a race distance, rather than simply deliver isolated quick laps.

“The race pace is really strong, the consistency is there, and the speed is there over a race distance. I feel it’s about executing the start of the race really well. If I’m not having to make up ground during the first couple of laps that we’ve lost from a poor start, I can then have a go at the top three or four.”

Spa offers the next opportunity

The GB3 Championship now heads to Spa-Francorchamps on 30/31 May, where Campbell-Pilling will aim to build on his Silverstone momentum.

The Belgian Grand Prix venue provides a very different challenge, with long straights, fast corners and major overtaking opportunities. However, Campbell-Pilling’s opening weekend suggests he already has the pace and consistency to compete near the front.

If he and Xcel Motorsport can sharpen the launch phase and avoid early losses, he could move from top-five contention into podium range. Silverstone proved that Campbell-Pilling belongs in the GB3 fight; Spa will now show how quickly he can turn that promise into an even bigger result.
