Nick Cassidy secured the third podium of his Citroën career in the Formula E Berlin E-Prix. The Kiwi displayed a consistent pace in the 39 laps around the Tempelhof circuit, even being in the fight for the race win. Ultimately, Cassidy ended up in second place, just five seconds shy of eventual race winner Nico Mueller.
A strong charge to P2
The former Jaguar TCS driver was especially elated with his performance as it came on a day in which he had physical issues. In fact, Cassidy highlighted his back issues after the Berlin E-Prix Formula E round, as well as his pleasure with another dominant display after his Mexican win.
“Yeah, I’m not 100% but I’m just really happy with today. Firstly, that, you know, I could be here and could get through it and actually, to be honest, really happy with my performance, qualifying and race. It’s, yeah, nice to be back in a way. “
The positive emotions came following some more challenging rounds, with only one points finish in the following four rounds. Even more so for this reason Cassidy stressed the importance of such a positive outcome in the first leg of the Formula E double header in Berlin.
“Look, for me the most important part is that I’m very vocal about being proud of myself and the last two races I didn’t do a good enough job.”
“So, yeah, some things might not have fallen my way but at the same time I put myself in those positions and I fully recognise that. So today was a day about like, okay, understanding what I’ve done wrong and being better and I feel like I’ve done that.”
After his positive German experience, the Citroën driver definitely hopes to gain some momentum and positive feelings to bring on in the upcoming rounds, starting from tomorrow’s race.
“ I really just feel proud of the comeback today. That for me was like one of my best performances in Formula E. So just happy to be back and hopefully that builds some momentum for the rest of the year.”
Cassidy shared his Berlin Formula E podium with first time winner Müller
With his latest exploit, Cassidy has returned within reach of the championship fight, settling into P5 with 69 points to his name, less than 20 points behind championship leader Edoardo Mortara.
However, the Kiwi warns that there are still many rounds to go before the end of the season in London in July. Additionally, he highly spoke of several of his colleagues, including first time race winner Nico Mueller.
“Look, it’s fantastic but at the same time everything’s pretty close and there’s seasons still very long so there’s a long way to go. We’re not quite at the performance level of these guys.”
“To be honest, one of the first things I should have said is congrats to Nico because today he was next level.Absolutely deserved that win. He’s a super classy driver.”
The Porsche driver claimed just today in Berlin, on the 75th anniversary of the team, his first ever race win in the championship.
“There should be more than one win to his name but now he’s in a fantastic seating position and he’s going to be probably with Rowland as well fighting for this championship and it’s just awesome to see that happen for him today.”
“So I’m in no worries and I’m obviously very, very proud and happy to be second because his win was thoroughly, thoroughly deserved.”
