Lola Yamaha’s Lucas Di Grassi claimed an emotional victory during Round 13 of the 2026 Formula E Shanghai E-Prix, view the full race report here.
Round 12 of the Season 12 Shanghai double-header kicked off with a dominant drive to victory from Pascal Wehrlein. The Porsche driver finished ahead of António Félix da Costa and Jake Dennis after navigating wet conditions, minor collisions, and a race-neutralizing safety car.
Now, after a strong Qualifying performance, Felipe Drugovich lined up on first ever Formula E pole alongside Taylor Barnard. Round 13 race winner Wehrlein started as Oliver Rowland and Nico Müller completed the top five.
Notably, Lucas Di Grassi served a 3-place grid drop after causing a collision in the previous Round 12 race. Norman Nato joined Di Grassi on the last row after being disqualified from Qualifying for not respecting the camber value given by the tire supplier. Additionally, Dan Ticktum and Sébastien Buemi also served separate 3-place grid drops, starting from P14 and P16, respectively.
Lights out for the Round 13 Shanghai E-Prix Race
As the cars headed out onto the grid for another wet race, Jaguar TCS Racing kept Mitch Evans’ car in the garage after discovering a technical issue. The Kiwi’s P12 starting spot was left empty as the race began with a safety car start.
After running behind a safety car, Race Control decided to have a standing start on Lap 4. As the five lights went out, Drugovich got off to a strong start, while Barnard, Pepe Martí, Edoardo Mortara, and Nyck De Vries chose to serve their first Attack at Turn 2. Wehrlein, Zane Maloney, and Dennis took their Attack Mode on the following lap, while Barnard made his way into the race lead.
Wehrlein soon took the lead away from Barnard, while Drugovich dropped back and took his Attack Mode on Lap 6. Wehrlein’s Porsche teammate Müller moved up to P2, with the Porsche duo working together to keep P1 and P2. Further back, Buemi and Mortara went wheel-to-wheel, battling for P6.
Wehrlein holds the lead
Lap 12 saw another close incident at Turn 8 as António Félix da Costa made contact with Oliver Rowland, leaving Da Costa with a damaged front wing. Race Control later showed Norman Nato a black-and-white flag for contact with Lucas Di Grassi at Turn 3.
With ten laps remaining, all eyes rested on Buemi, who held a greater energy advantage compared to his rivals in the top ten. The Envision Racing driver took his final Attack Mode deployment on Lap 19. Running P1 and P2, Porsche quickly responded, sending Müller into his second Attack Mode. Meanwhile, Buemi’s teammate Joel Eriksson remained close behind, with the three soon engaging in a close three-car battle.
Maloney triggers a Full Course Yellow in the closing laps
Eriksson managed to take the race lead and his final Attack Mode moments before Zane Maloney triggered a Full Course Yellow (FCY) after stopping on the main straight with rear damage. Notably, before the FCY, Lucas Di Grassi set the fastest lap, making his way up to P3 with a final Attack Mode remaining.
As the race resumed on Lap 25, Eriksson held onto P1, with Jean-Éric Vergne following in P2, and Di Grassi in P3. Di Grassi took his final Attack Mode on the penultimate lap, as the top three closely fought for the race win. Running with extra power, Di Grassi lunged into the lead on the final lap, crossing the chequered flag first ahead of Jean-Éric Vergne and Joel Eriksson.
Lucas Di Grassi’s Round 13 Shanghai E-Prix Race victory marks Lola Yamaha ABT’s first-ever win in the FIA Formula E World Championship.
