It’s time to set the grid for the second leg of the Formula E Tokyo E-Prix double header with Qualifying. Yesterday, Jake Dennis had scored his third pole of the 2025/2026 season, which led him to a great second place finish. Dan Ticktum won the first round, with a last lap move on the Brit.
Earlier, FP3 was cancelled due to weather conditions, for the intensity of the rain
Group A
Evans, Dennis, da Costa, Müller, Buemi, Drugovich, Eriksson, Vergne, Barnard, Nato took the field in the first group. After the first round of attempts, the Porsche man was in the lead, following a severe impact with the wall during yesterday’s Qualifying. Nato, da Costa and Evans we’re provisionally through as well.
Eriksson went into P1 at the mid-way point of the session, hoping to build on his Shanghai podium finish. Times began to significantly decrease due to track evolution, with da Costa, Evans and Müller cycling at the lead.
Ultimately, the session ended with a Jaguar 1-2, as da Costa and Evans led the advancing group of Barnard and Nato. There were heated moments, as the championship leader only bolted up to P2 with his final flying lap.
In a surprising turn of events, yesterday’s pole sitter Dennis got knocked out of Qualifying.
Group B
Wehrlein lead from Rowland, Maloney and di Grassi after the first set of benchmarks. At the halfway point, Mahindra overtook, with Mortara and de Vries moving to the front of the field with 1:15s times.
Cupra Kiro as well had a moment to shine through with both Ticktum and Martí cycling at the lead. Due to the increasing heat, the track is drying out but not actually allowing the drivers to improve their previous lap times.
The only man able to join the Duels stage with his final attempt was Rowland, with championship contender Wehrlein out of contention. Rowland moves forward with Mortara, de Vries, and Ticktum.
Quarter Finals
Barnard and Evans faced off in the first Duel of the day. The DS Penske driver had a very strong start to his lap, immediately developing a 0.250s lead over the championship leader, increasing it to over three hundreds in the middle sector. While the Jaguar man tried to reduce his gap, it was not sufficient to knock out the young Brit, as Barnard advanced to the next Tokyo Formula E Qualifying step.
Nato and da Costa are the next contenders, with da Costa developing an early lead over the Nissan man, sporting an updated livery for the team’s home race. Nato reduced to only 0.112s his distance to the Jaguar man, but ultimately failed to close the gap.
Ticktum and de Vries are the stars of the third Quarter Final. This duel was more undecided than the previous. In fact, de Vries started out in the lead, with Ticktum retaking the lead in the middle conner but suffering from an oversteer snap in the final sector. Ultimately, de Vries didn’t manage to close the 0.431s gap separating him from yesterday’s race winner, who will thus advance to the Semi Finals.
Mortara and Rowland close this Qualifying segment. The Nissan man immediately ran wide at the beginning of his lap, handing to the Italian-Swiss rival a comfortable advantage of over 0.800s. Mortara confirmed his speed, increasing the gap to over a second and confirming the pace shown in the first Tokyo Qualifying session, as well as throughout the Formula E season.
Semi Finals
Da Costa and Barnard compete for the first Final spot. Both of them braked late at the first corner, losing more than a bit of speed. Da Costa went faster in the first and second sectors, increasing his lead to 0.150s. The DS Penske man tried to secure the spot for himself, but only reduced his gap to the Portuguese to 0.093s.
Mortara and Ticktum immediately appeared to be on par in terms of speed, with the two of them exchanging the lead in the first sector. Mortara secured a bit of margin over the Brit in the secon section, with Ticktum going faster to try and avoid not making the cut but ultimately making slight contact with the wall.
Final
Two household names who have already proven their speed throughout their Formula E careers are charging to secure the first three points of the day. Mortara and da Costa take on the Tokyo circuit.
Mortara immediately appeared in control, quickly developing a 0.647s lead over the Jaguar man. Ultimately, the Mahindra driver couldn’t be stopped, following his Final loss to Dennis just yesterday. Mortara secures his fourth pole of the 2025/2026 season, to da Costa and Dennis’s three.
