Irish teenager Conor Grant heads to Oulton Park determined to transform promising pace into stronger results after a frustrating opening weekend of the GB4 Championship season at Silverstone.
The 18-year-old showed encouraging speed throughout pre-season testing and established himself as one of the leading rookie contenders despite entering the championship with limited single-seater experience. However, difficult circumstances during the opening round prevented him from fully capitalising on that potential.
Grant secured a best finish of 10th in Race 2 at Silverstone before adding 12th place in the reverse-grid finale. Nevertheless, the Douglas Motorsport driver believes the results failed to reflect the speed he showed across the weekend.
Silverstone frustration fuels motivation for Grant ahead of 2026 GB4 round in Oulton Park
Grant entered the season opener carrying strong momentum from pre-season testing, where he regularly featured inside the top 10. That form continued during official testing at Silverstone, although Qualifying ultimately left him starting from the middle of the pack in 15th position.
An opening-race incident then pushed him back to 20th and compromised the remainder of the weekend. Despite the setbacks, Grant believes the experience has strengthened his determination ahead of Round 2.
“To be honest, Silverstone was disappointing,” he reflected while speaking to GB4. “I felt we had much more pace than the results showed. A difficult qualifying session and the incident in race one really put us on the back foot for the weekend. That said, it’s only made me hungrier heading into Oulton Park.”
Douglas Motorsport delivers encouraging start
Although Grant endured a challenging weekend personally, Douglas Motorsport demonstrated its competitiveness from the very beginning of the season. Teammates Dayton Coulthard and Jason Smyth both claimed podium finishes, while Coulthard secured victory in the final race of the event.
Consequently, Grant takes confidence from the pace already shown by the team and believes the package exists to compete at the front.
“The team did an awesome job and both of the boys delivered really strong results,” he acknowledged. “Of course, it was frustrating knowing we had the potential to be up there with them, but that’s also a big motivation for me.
“We know we have the pace and the package to fight at the front, so it’s about putting everything together over the weekend.”
Confidence growing ahead of 2026 GB4 round at Oulton Park
Grant now arrives at Oulton Park, encouraged by his previous performance during the official pre-season test at the Cheshire circuit. Throughout that test, he consistently ran near the front of the field and developed confidence in both the car and the circuit.
In addition, his working relationship with engineer Cliff Dempsey continues to strengthen as the season progresses.
“Oulton is a great circuit and we found a really good rhythm during the official test. Cliff [Dempsey], my engineer, and I have worked hard and built a strong foundation heading into the weekend.
“I’m feeling confident and really looking forward to getting back out there.”
The fast and technical nature of Oulton Park could provide Grant with another opportunity to demonstrate the speed that impressed during testing.
Adjusting to UK single-seater racing
Grant’s rapid adaptation remains particularly impressive considering his limited previous experience in car racing. Before joining GB4, he competed in only a handful of American single-seater events, making him eligible for this season’s Rookie title battle.
However, the transition from racing in the United States to competing in the UK has presented several challenges.
“Everything is different — the car, the racing style, the environment,” he admits. “Coming back to race in the UK felt a bit like learning to walk again, but I’m adapting more every time I’m in the car.”
Even so, Grant has quickly established himself as a genuine contender in the Rookie standings, where he currently sits second behind Fortec driver Franek Cegielski.
Rookie battle adds extra motivation for Grant ahead of 2026 GB4 round at Oulton Park
The Rookie Championship fight has already emerged as one of the most competitive storylines early in the season. Grant recognises the challenge posed by Cegielski but remains focused on fighting for success in both classifications.
Rather than limiting his ambitions to rookie honours alone, the Irish teenager wants to establish himself higher up the overall standings as well.
“Franek [Cegielski] has been really quick in testing and at round one, so he’s definitely going to be tough to beat. Winning the Rookie title would be an amazing achievement, but at the same time, I’m aiming for a strong overall championship position as well.”
As the GB4 Championship heads to Oulton Park, Grant now hopes to combine his evident pace with cleaner race weekends and convert his growing confidence into the results his performances have already suggested are possible.
