Fred Green opened his GB4 career with victory at Silverstone, converting pole position into a win in Race 1 of the 2026 season. However, despite leading throughout, he encountered early challenges as track conditions differed from those he experienced in qualifying. This variation required immediate adjustment during the opening phase of the race.
He identified a mistake in the early laps, which he attributed to the difficulty of managing conditions at the start. Nevertheless, he recovered quickly and maintained control for the remainder of the race, focusing on consistent execution.
“Yeah, it was good. The track was a bit tricky compared to Qualifying, so a bit trickier than I expected, hence the mistake on early doors. So, yeah, a bit disappointed about that, but then, the rest of the execution was really good and I couldn’t be happier.”
One-two result for the team
In addition to his own result, Green highlighted the overall outcome for his team. His teammate, Emmilio Valentino Del Grosso, secured second place, completing a one-two finish and strengthening the team’s position at the start of the season. He acknowledged this result as part of the broader performance across the team during the race weekend.
“So chuffed for my teammate coming second as well, honestly. Couldn’t be happier.”
Green on maximising pole position in GB4 Race 1 as focus shifts to Sunday at Silverstone
Green also addressed the circumstances surrounding his pole position start. While he recognised how the opportunity arose, he focused on the importance of execution once the race began. From the front of the grid, he maintained track position and avoided errors, allowing him to control the race.
Furthermore, he emphasised that the outcome resulted from delivering a clean and consistent performance across all laps.
“For sure, I would have gave it a good go. It’s never nice to gain from someone else’s misfortune, but, we did our job and didn’t put a foot wrong, and hence why we were on pole and won the race. So, yeah, I’m really happy.”
Following the opening race, Green turned his attention to the remainder of the weekend. He outlined his intention to carry the same approach into the next race while recognising the competitive nature of the field. At the same time, he indicated that maintaining performance would require continued focus and execution.
“That’s the plan. I don’t see why not, but obviously these boys are very competitive, so it’s not going to be easy. But we’ll have a good go.”
Learning from the Race 1
Reflecting further, Green identified key takeaways from his first GB4 race. He pointed to his race start as an area of improvement compared to previous testing sessions, noting a clear step forward in that aspect.
In addition, he addressed tyre management during the opening lap, where he misjudged grip levels. This moment formed part of his overall assessment as he reviewed areas for refinement moving forward.
“I was quite happy with my start then, actually. Compared to my testing ones, it was quite good, so that was a relief. But, just the pressure of getting your first race done, really. Obviously, I overestimated the cold tyres on lap one and went off. So, yeah, there’s small things to take, but overall, I think it was quite a good first effort.”
Green’s performance in the opening race established an early benchmark for the season. By combining a strong start, consistent race management, and post-race evaluation, he completed a controlled debut while identifying areas to develop ahead of the remaining races.
