The second IndyCar practice session of the Sonsio GP weekend is in the books as FP1 took place at IMS, view the full report and results below. It was a short 35-minute session ahead of qualifying later this afternoon at IMS.
With 24 of the 27 cars straight out on track as Santino Ferrucci had a clutch issue, traffic was the story of the early minutes as nobody could complete a full push lap as slow traffic was everywhere from turn 7 onwards.
Eventually proper times started to come in. Nolan Siegel clocked a 1:10.925 to lead Kirkwood, Rasmussen, Daly and Lundgaard six minutes in.
In turn 7, Scott Dixon took a trip through the grass as he locked up both fronts on entry. The Kiwi bounced back as he clocked a 1:10.913 to go fastest by a hundredth from Siegel. Kirkwood, Daly and DeFrancesco followed.
Kyffin Simpson continued to impress as he went P1 once again as he logged a 1:10.740, before Josef Newgarden pumped in a 1:10.652 to take over at the top. O’Ward moved up to 4th.
The driver from the Cayman Islands responded to Newgarden as he smashed in a 1:10.369. Palou split them as he went within two hundredths of his teammate Simpson.
Down at PREMA Robert Shwartzman had an engine issue and was left stuck in the pits yet again in a practice session.
Drivers start to use softs
The red tyres started to appear as FP2 at the IndyCar Sonsio GP went on with Robb, Siegel, Abel, Foster and Daly going out on them. Robb went P1 with a 1:10.165, going a tenth faster than Palou on blacks. Nolan Siegel did a 1:10.391 to split Simpson and Lundgaard.
Foster, Power, Newgarden, Kirkwood and Dixon rounded out the top 10 with 15 minutes remaining.
As for Scott McLaughlin, he was struggling. After moving up to P24 only, he had a huge snap of oversteer on the entry to turn 12 and headed to the run-off.
Using the soft tyre, Louis Foster set the fastest time of the day as the 2024 Indy NXT season as he smashed in a 1:09.862 to go 0.3s faster than Robb. Conor Daly moved into P3 behind his teammate as the top 3 all used the softer compound.
It turned into a RLL 1-2 with a few minutes remaining as Devlin DeFrancesco put in a 1:10.069 on softs.
Out of turn 10, Kyle Kirkwood spun out of turn 10 as he put his left rear wheel on the grass on exit.
Graham Rahal jumped to the top inside the final two minutes as he did a 1:09.724 to pace Foster by over a tenth. DeFrancesco, Robb, Daly and Rossi completed the top 6 as they all used the red compound. Championship leader Alex Palou was the fastest driver on blacks with P7.
