Following a challenging streak of races, Charles Leclerc secured an impressive victory at the 2026 F1 British GP, marking a significant return to the top step of the podium. This win is also a significant milestone for Scuderia Ferrari, representing their 250th victory.
After qualifying in second place, Leclerc launched into the lead at the start of the Grand Prix and maintained control, ultimately crossing the finish line in first, with his teammate Lewis Hamilton securing third place.
Mastering the Silverstone circuit at the 2026 F1 British GP
In the press conference following the race, Leclerc emphasised the difficulty of navigating the recent period of negativity and external narratives. He explained that he felt immense pride in the team’s effort to help him rediscover his comfort within the car. The Ferrari driver acknowledged that while this win is a crucial step, he remains focused on proving his performance across various track layouts.
“It means a lot, it means a lot because when things get tough and that’s literally the situation I’ve been in the last few few races, obviously there’s a lot of negativity around me in general with narratives being created and it’s never a nice environment to work in but to keep our head down and to keep working very hard and and get the result that we got today, I’m super proud of the whole team that have been pushing me and helping me to find that feeling again with the car. As I said it’s only a first step and I’ve got to prove that on multiple track layouts but on such a track where confidence is key I wouldn’t have been able to do that without the feeling and so yeah that’s really good.”
When asked about his history at the circuit, specifically his race in 2021, he admitted that while the win feels very good, he did not dwell on the past during his drive.
“Yeah I didn’t really think about that when I was in the car but yeah I don’t know if it made up for it but yeah it feels very good.”
Leclerc on the tactical execution at the 2026 F1 British GP
Leclerc explained the tactical approach he took during the race’s opening stages. He credited his success to a strong start and effective tyre management, which allowed him to profit from set-up adjustments.
The Monegasque clarified that he found a level of comfort that made a race win feel like a possibility. He further acknowledged that while luck played a role in his race, the win was proof of the team’s successful technical direction.
“Yeah I mean we had a very very strong start which wasn’t a given because yesterday the start was very poor so that was a point of focus and after that I just try and manage my tyres, focus on the feeling I had with the car from qualifying. I knew what to do inside the car, I knew what to change in terms of tools that I have on my steering wheel and yeah I just felt very comfortable in the car especially in the first stint. So yeah then I understood that the win was a possibility. It was going to be tricky with Kimi at the end so we’ve been a little bit lucky on that but we also need that sometimes.”
Evaluating the competitive gap
Addressing the recent increase in Ferrari’s form, Leclerc expressed caution regarding whether the team can now consistently challenge Mercedes. He highlighted that the weekend’s performance was a significant surprise, noting that the team had initially anticipated being several tenths off the pace during their Thursday preparations.
He also explained that just as the team must look into poor performances, it is equally important to understand why they performed far better than expected at the 2026 F1 British GP.
“Well I think it’s too early to say. I think this weekend was a particularly big surprise for the whole team. Not the win today, just the overall performance. I mean we were a lot faster than what we thought and I think as much as we need to analyse when things are going a lot worse than expected we also need to analyse when things go a lot better than expected and yeah coming into the weekend I remember the meetings that we’ve done on Thursday and we kind of thought we’ll be six tenths, five tenths off minimum and yeah and we were much better than that and we’re actually winning today.”
Leclerc explains the role of intuition in technical improvements
When asked about how such significant improvements were possible, Leclerc clarified his previous comments regarding the “philosophical” changes to the car. He described the process as a focus on small details that improved the car’s behavior during specific phases of cornering.
The Ferrari driver explained that the shift in performance was not a simple interpretation of data, but rather a mixture of technical analysis and driver intuition.
“Uh yeah I mean when you say when I say philosophical it’s more about uh I mean it’s it’s small details that just fits my driving a little bit better in a particular phase of the corner and I don’t want to go too much into detail there but it’s just few things that I saw on the data on Friday night and I was like okay that might be um things that just don’t fit with my driving style and we changed those few things from sprint race to qualifying and that was a lot a lot better so uh yeah I was very proud of the work we’ve done to see that because I think this kind of changes it’s not really so black and white you just don’t look at data and say oh my god okay this is what we need to change it’s intuition mixed with feeling and um yeah and then we went for it and it was actually a very successful direction for me so I was uh I was very happy.”
Regarding his expectations for the upcoming race in Spa, he clarified that his primary focus will remain on replicating the positive feeling he found in the car at Silverstone, as he believes that feeling is the key to extracting the maximum potential from the SF-26.
While he acknowledged that the team is pushing hard to challenge Mercedes, he warned that it would be a mistake to focus solely on winning. Instead, he plans to center his efforts on the ongoing learning process, aiming to understand why the car performed so well at the 2026 F1 British GP so that they can effectively prepare for the future.
“Well personally I don’t really focus on that. I think where I’ll be focussing on is just to try and get that feeling again in the car. If I have that feeling in the car I’m confident that I will extract the maximum out of this car, if I don’t then it might be more tricky so but then the overall result of course we are pushing extremely hard as a team in order to fight and challenge Mercedes we were expecting a very difficult weekend here in Silverstone. I think prior to this weekend we were expecting even more of a difficult weekend in Spa considering we obviously won today maybe we are a bit closer than um what we initially thought but it’s still to be proven so and for that we also need to understand why is what, why was it an outstandingly good weekend compared to our expectations so we’ll focus on all that but personally I won’t be yeah focussing on just winning because that will be the the wrong approach I’ll just focus on the process in order to to get the best feeling and to maximise this car.”
