Maxim Rehm continued his strong start to the 2026 GB3 Championship with a podium finish in Race 1 at Silverstone. The Rodin Motorsport driver delivered a composed and competitive performance, remaining firmly in contention at the front throughout the race. However, despite securing third place, Rehm left the circuit believing that more was possible, particularly given his pace in the latter stages.
Moreover, his race highlighted both strategic awareness and growing confidence, positioning him as a serious contender for victory in the remaining races of the weekend.
Fast start sets up early challenge but tyre warm-up limits early pace
Rehm made an excellent launch from the grid and immediately challenged for the lead into the opening corners. His aggressive approach paid dividends early on, although he ultimately settled into second place behind his teammate.
“I think we had a very good start. We were almost up to P1 in the first corner. I had to give some space to Martin. I was on the outside, so I stayed at P2 for the beginning of the race.”
As a result, he maintained a strong track position and kept himself within striking distance of the lead battle during the opening phase.
Despite his strong start, however, Rehm encountered difficulties in extracting peak performance from his tyres in the early laps. This limitation prevented him from immediately applying pressure at the front.
“And I think we just struggled a bit to get the tyres in. We lacked a bit of pace in the first half of the race, but then as the tyres evolved, I think we got a really good pace to the end. We were one of the quickest on track. I [caught] Martin quite a bit, was about to overtake him. Sadly, the Safety Car came out. But we still have two races tomorrow to maybe get that race win. So, let’s see what happens.”
However, as the race progressed and tyre performance improved, Rehm’s pace increased significantly. Consequently, he began to close the gap to Martin Molnar and looked poised to mount a decisive move before the Safety Car neutralised the race.
Aggression key to early gains
Rehm emphasised the importance of a committed approach at the start, particularly at a circuit like Silverstone where early opportunities can define the race outcome.
“You have to be aggressive at the start. I think in this track right now, it’s the easiest way to make up positions, and it worked out for me. Just couldn’t keep them. But, yeah, I think the start has to be aggressive.”
Therefore, while aggression carries inherent risks, it remains a crucial element in gaining track position and establishing a competitive advantage.
Rehm confident ahead of remaining 2026 GB3 Silverstone races after Race 1 podium
With one podium already secured, Rehm now turns his attention to the remaining two races of the weekend. His strong late-race pace and confidence in race conditions suggest that he has the tools required to challenge for victory.
Ultimately, although Race 1 did not deliver the top step, Rehm’s performance reinforced his status as a front-running contender. If he can combine his aggressive starts with improved tyre management across the full race distance, he will remain a strong candidate to convert potential into victory at Silverstone.
