Alex Rossi, Pato O’Ward and Romain Grosjean have walked away from a big crash in Indy 500 Monday practice ahead of the race next Sunday.

Turn 2 at Indy catches out Rossi as O’Ward and Grosjean get caught in it

Running in traffic as the 33 drivers looked to get some valuable mileage in on old tyres and in dirty air, the first big crash of the month came with just over 90 minutes remaining in the 2-hour session.

P16 on the charts, 2026 Indy 500 front row starter Rossi was attempting to take turn 2 when the rear let go on him, and it meant O’Ward and Grosjean were absolute passengers in the process. As the Mexican’s Arrow McLaren spun as he tried to avoid the ECR machine, his car clouted into the sidepod of the #20.

Behind them, Romain Grosjean also found trouble. With the Frenchman trying to avoid the carnage in front, he spun and ended up hitting the wall.

While all three drivers were thankfully alright, the cars all sustained damage. Alongside a massive hit with the wall, the 34-year-old’s ECR package got a second clout from the unlucky O’Ward. His car was badly beaten up.

The session was stopped for 20 minutes as a lot of debris and three broken race cars had to be removed from the circuit. Lightning then arrived in the area to reduce the time on track even further as the session ended very early.

Indy 500 practice results

Starting down in 23rd on Sunday, two-time Indy 500 winner Josef Newgarden was fastest in the #2 car. Other former victors in Sato, Hunter-Reay, Ericsson and Dixon made it five in the top six. Rookie Dennis Hauger placed P3.

Polesitter Alex Palou was down in 17th, with David Malukas 12th as he’ll start on the front row this Sunday.
