Jason Smyth heads to Oulton Park with confidence, momentum and a clear target after an impressive start to his 2026 GB4 Championship campaign in Silverstone.

The Douglas Motorsport driver sits third in the drivers’ standings after the Silverstone season opener, where he claimed fifth, third and fourth across the three races. Those results gave him 59 points and placed him just behind Fred Green and Enzo Hallman in the early championship order.

Moreover, Smyth achieved that strong start in his first slicks-and-wings event after stepping up from Formula Ford. Now, the Formula Ford Festival and Walter Hayes Trophy winner wants to turn early consistency into race-winning pace when GB4 resumes at Oulton Park on 23-25 May.

Smyth reflects on a productive 2026 GB4 Silverstone opener

Smyth left Silverstone encouraged by his first GB4 podium, although he still saw room for improvement after the final race. His strong points haul confirmed his ability to adapt quickly, while his podium finish gave him an early benchmark in the championship fight.

“It’s not too bad but I was a bit disappointed with the last race at Silverstone,” he said to GB4. “I should have had fourth [on the road] which would have been third but it was a pretty good weekend and I’m delighted to be P3 in the championship. It was nice to get a podium over and done with early, and now we need to go for the top step. I can be happy with finishing third but all I want is to finish first.”

Qualifying holds the key to the next step

Although Smyth raced strongly at Silverstone, he believes Qualifying will make the biggest difference as he chases victory. He started sixth and fifth for the opening two races, yet he feels he already has the pace to challenge at the very front.

“We know we’ve got the pace, I should have done a time for pole by a tenth. But most of it is getting used to the new tyres, the pace is really good, but just getting the best out of the new is where I’m struggling a little bit. I know it’s there and every weekend we’re going to get stronger and stronger.”

Consequently, Smyth’s focus now centres on extracting more from fresh tyres. That improvement could prove decisive at Oulton Park, where track position often shapes the race outcome.

Slicks and aero progress boosts confidence

Smyth entered GB4 after a dominant Formula Ford campaign, and the move brought a major technical change. Slick tyres, aerodynamic grip and higher-speed corners all demanded rapid adaptation. Nevertheless, Silverstone showed that he had already made a strong transition.

“I’ve got the slicks and aero nailed now, and all the high speed stuff I was struggling on. I know as the year progresses I will be on it, and we were best just scoring big points at Silverstone and getting used to it. I know we’ll come back stronger and stronger.”

That learning curve now gives Smyth a stronger platform for the next rounds. In addition, Douglas Motorsport lead the teams’ championship battle after the opening round, helped by Smyth’s consistency and Dayton Coulthard’s Race 3 victory.

Oulton Park offers a major opportunity

The next GB4 triple-header takes Smyth to Oulton Park, where qualifying performance could carry even greater importance. The circuit leaves little room for error, and overtaking can prove difficult around its tight and technical layout.

“In these cars, the biggest thing is Quali, we showed good pace at Oulton Park in testing, so I’m expecting good things there. I need to keep my head down, Qualifying is the main thing, because Oulton Park is so tight and you’re better off starting at the front. We’ll see what happens and keep on working.”

Therefore, Smyth knows exactly where he must improve. If he converts his testing pace into a stronger grid position, he could give himself a genuine chance to fight for his first GB4 win.
