Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has opened up about both Kimi Antonelli and George Russell being the early favourites for the 2026 F1 drivers’ crown and the lessons he has taken from the infamous Hamilton-Rosberg rivalry to prevent any internal conflict from imploding the team.

Mercedes’s current supremacy extends not only to the constructors’ battle, where they have built a comfortable gap of 45 points to Ferrari, but also to the drivers’ standings. After the first three rounds of the 2026 campaign, Antonelli and Russell have clearly established themselves as the front-runners in the championship, with Charles Leclerc not posing any imminent threat in third.

Although many had expected Russell to have the upper hand over Antonelli yet again, the early rounds have told a different story. The 19-year-old exceeded all expectations by securing back-to-back pole positions and victories in China and Japan and became the youngest driver to lead the F1 world championship.

Russell, currently second in the standings, can no doubt overcome a deficit of only 9 points with many race weekends to go. However, with his younger teammate finding his feet from the very beginning of the season, the path to his maiden drivers’ title will very likely be a bumpy one, to say the least.

Wolff believes Mercedes can handle a title fight between teammates Antonelli and Russell

While the introduction of turbo-hybrid power units in 2014 ushered in an era of utter Mercedes dominance, it also saw Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg go from karting teammates and friends to bitter rivals as they battled each other for the drivers’ title in three seasons in a row. Their on-track clashes—most notably in Belgium 2014, Austria 2016, and their scandalous collision at the 2016 Spanish GP—are well-documented and resulted in the duo being threatened with suspension at the height of their rivalry.

During a media call on Monday, Toto Wolff reflected on the notorious ‘Silver War’ between Hamilton and Rosberg and referred to the wisdom they gained from the fierce intra-team rivalry that had once threatened to tear the Brackley-based squad apart.

Emphasising how teammates are each other’s biggest adversaries in F1, Wolff offered assurances that Mercedes are well equipped to handle a hotly contested title fight between Antonelli and Russell in 2026.

“The oddity in Formula 1 is that the two teammates are also the biggest competitors. And we have learned a lot over the last 10 plus years in how to best handle these situations.”

Asserting that the best strategy is to allow Antonelli and Russell to race each other during the 2026 F1 season and acknowledge their competitiveness, Toto Wolff nonetheless maintained that the interest of Mercedes would always override the personal aspirations of the drivers.

Highlighting their rich legacy and claiming how it’s a massive privilege to represent the German automotive brand on the track, the Austrian elaborated that the drivers are first and foremost responsible towards the team and that Mercedes wouldn’t allow any self-serving behaviour to thrive.

“But best handle means also letting them race and acknowledging the fact that they race.

“There are certain values that we stand for in the team. The team is always bigger than the drivers.

“It is Mercedes, one of the most formidable brands in the world, the best car brand in the world. We race for 150,000 people that work for us, a company that exists for more than 120 years.

“And having the opportunity to race, to be one of the few selected [to] race for Mercedes, also comes with a responsibility for racing for Mercedes. And the moment the driver feels like this is all about him, that’s not the mindset that we would ever allow or accept in the team.”

Why Wolff is confident that Mercedes F1 won’t see a repeat of the bitter Hamilton-Rosberg rivalry in 2026

Referring to how they had approached the intense rivalry between Hamilton and Rosberg in the past, Toto Wolff proclaimed that Mercedes would rather take to the track with one car instead of two in the upcoming races of the 2026 F1 campaign if Antonelli or Russell refuse to conform to the team’s established principles.

At the same time, the 54-year-old surmised that the current Mercedes duo would never come to blows given that they have been deeply entrenched in the team since their junior formulae days and are well-versed in the Brackley-based outfit’s heritage and philosophy.

“And we’ve done that in the past. I would rather have only one car driving if that wasn’t clear, that wasn’t happening.

“But I think it will never come to that point, because our drivers have been so long in the Mercedes family that they are part of that mindset and this philosophical approach and the legacy that they represent.”
