As the Formula 1 circus heads into Round 4 of the 2026 season held at the F1 Miami Grand Prix, all eyes are set to be on Kimi Antonelli. The Mercedes driver has become the youngest driver in history to lead the World Drivers’ Championship which of course comes with its own set of pressures and expectations. Despite this, Toto Wolff has dismissed the notion that Mercedes has set higher expectations for Antonelli because of his recent jump in the Driver’s standings.

Kimi Antonelli’s impressive start to the season

Kimi Antonelli joined the Mercedes team in 2025 and managed a few impressive results. But with those results also came some very challenging moments that had almost everyone questioning whether he was ready for the difficulty of Formula 1 racing.

After finishing in P7 in the 2025 World Drivers’ Championship with a total of 150 points, just a mere 6 points behind 7 time World Champion Lewis Hamilton, Antonelli now leads the championship in 2026. This makes him the youngest driver in Formula 1 history to do so.

Antonelli sits ahead of his teammate, George Russell, who has been racing in the sport for the past 8 seasons, making him much more experienced. Despite his inexperience, Antonelli is proving to be a formidable teammate and competitor.

It seems as though Antonelli’s results have not only surprised the world of F1, but they’ve also surprised himself. The Italian driver explained that the start of the season is shaping up to be better than what the team had expected and hoped for. He also alluded that expectations are now different, implying that more is anticipated of him based on the past three Grands Prix.

Toto Wolff’s expectations for Antonelli

Toto Wolff, Team Principal and CEO of the Mercedes F1 Team has stated that the expectations around Kimi Antonelli’s performance at the team have not increased.

When asked about internal expectations and whether or not they have been risen, Wolff responded saying:

“No, actually not, because we were hoping to find a driver that is outstanding. But bearing in mind his age and his relative lack of experience, [we knew] that it would take at least a season to find his foot, find his feet. And that’s happening.”

It’s easy to jump to conclusions when the results are coming in, but Wolff has insisted that the team is not expecting a miracle and that they’re being realistic about the circumstances that have benefitted Antonelli’s results. Without diminishing his recent performances, Wolff went on to say:

“But at the same time, not expecting now an all-year miracle. So I think we’ve seen some very good racing so far this season, much less mistakes. Also the odd situation where he’s benefited from certain racing outcome strategies, safety cars, but that’s going to swing both directions.”

When looking back at the past three Grands Prix, there have been a variety of factors that have prevented Russell from scoring more points and in the same breath, have assisted Antonelli in winning.

While that’s not to undermine the performances based on his merit, F1 is an unpredictable sport and occasionally the cards can fall one way before the luck once again changes.

Internal support from Wolff and Mercedes F1

Wolff has always been very vocal about providing support and guidance for Antonelli as the young Italian navigates this cutthroat series.

When asked about his helping hand, Wolff emphasised that keeping it truthful and honest with the two-time race winner is important.

“We just need to continue to be authentic in our relationship with him. When it’s good, it’s good and say that. And when it’s bad, it’s bad and say that. How can you improve? And he doesn’t need to justify anymore to us that he hasn’t got the speed or hasn’t got the ability or hasn’t got the right character.

“Now it’s just a matter of more experience. And it’s something that comes over time. And then sometimes it’s putting the arm around him. Sometimes it’s saying you need to improve in that area. So I think we just continue what we’ve done and hope that’s going to yield great performances and outcomes.”

After only a year in Formula 1, Antonelli is showcasing a masterclass in confidence on track and translating that into incredible results. Although Wolff and Mercedes reject the claims of a rise in expectations, the pressure is on for the young driver as he’ll head into Miami aiming to hold onto his championship lead.
