The 2026 International GT Open season began with an unexpected yet compelling storyline at Portimão, where ZRS Motorsport emerged as the standout performer. Entering the series for the first time, the Italian team immediately demonstrated its potential by securing pole position and converting it into a commanding Race 1 victory. This achievement not only highlighted the team’s preparation but also underlined the competitiveness of the new Porsche 992.2 GT3 package.

While established teams fought for consistency across the weekend, ZRS Motorsport seized its moment and delivered a statement performance. As a result, the Portimão opener provided not only thrilling racing but also a clear signal that new contenders can challenge the established order in 2026.

A dream International GT Open debut at Portimão

ZRS Motorsport could hardly have asked for a better introduction to GT3 competition. Alex Fontana and Pietro Armanni combined experience and youthful pace to dominate Saturday’s proceedings. From securing pole position to executing a controlled race, the pairing ensured the team’s first appearance ended in victory.

The result came as a surprise to many observers, given the team’s relative inexperience at this level. However, their performance reflected meticulous preparation during the off-season. Moreover, the Porsche 992.2 GT3 proved immediately competitive, allowing the team to challenge—and beat—more established rivals.

Despite strong pressure from competitors such as Team Motopark and Greystone GT, ZRS maintained composure throughout the race. Consequently, their victory not only rewarded their efforts but also positioned them as early contenders in the championship battle.

Building success from strong foundations

ZRS Motorsport’s rapid rise does not come without context. The team has steadily developed its racing credentials over recent years, competing in GT Cup Europe and achieving notable success. Their progression into GT3 competition represents a natural next step, built on consistent growth and experience.

“Maybe I shouldn’t come to races”, joked Nicolò Zambon but unable to hide his satisfaction. “We didn’t expect to be so competitive from the start, but we knew we had done our homework well over the winter. Getting into GT3 at this time was the right move to make for us. The Porsche 992 Evo is a very good car, and Fontana and Armanni are a very good pair, mixing experience and youth. There is no need to say how good Alex is as a racer, a tester and a coach, and Pietro, who was a GT Cup Europe vice champion with us last year, is a fast young driver with a lot of potential, who showed great solidity in his GT Open debut. I think we can be competitive throughout the season and hopefully be in the fight for the title.”

This confidence reflects a team that understands both its strengths and its ambitions. Furthermore, their structured approach has enabled them to transition effectively into a highly competitive environment.

Engineering excellence behind the scenes

Behind the on-track success lies a strong technical foundation. ZRS Motorsport benefited from experienced personnel, including race engineer Jody Firth, whose involvement proved crucial in maximising performance.

“It was nice to be involved in these two wins”, says the Brit, “and a honor to give its first European outright win to the new Porsche 911 GT3R EVO. It was ZRS’s GT3 race, and we had only done two days of testing. Huge credit must go to Alex and Pietro, who were superb.”

This combination of technical expertise and driver performance allowed the team to deliver results despite limited testing. In addition, it highlighted the effectiveness of their preparation and adaptability under race conditions.

Looking ahead after Portimão

Following their breakthrough victory, ZRS Motorsport now faces the challenge of maintaining momentum throughout the season. While competitors such as Greystone GT and Team Motopark have already demonstrated strong consistency, ZRS has shown it can match—and even surpass—them on performance.

Importantly, their debut success has already re-established Porsche at the top step of the podium, marking a significant milestone for both the team and the manufacturer. As the championship progresses, ZRS Motorsport will aim to build on this foundation and remain in contention for overall honours.

Ultimately, the Portimão opener has introduced a new and exciting dynamic to the 2026 GT Open season. ZRS Motorsport has proven that preparation, teamwork, and belief can deliver immediate success—even at the highest level.
