The 2026 International GT Open season opener at Portimão delivered not only thrilling racing but also a significant milestone in the championship’s history. Zac Meakin secured his maiden victory in Race 2 alongside Dean Macdonald for Greystone GT, and in doing so, he became the 200th different driver to win a GT Open race. This achievement adds a historic dimension to an already impressive performance and highlights Meakin’s emergence as a rising force in GT racing.
While the weekend featured strong competition across all classes, Meakin’s breakthrough moment stood out as both a personal triumph and a landmark for the series. As the championship continues to evolve, new names continue to shape its legacy, and Meakin now holds a permanent place within it.
Meakin celebrates a milestone moment in 2026 GT Open Round 1 at Portimão
Zac Meakin’s victory at Portimão carried significance far beyond the result itself. By crossing the line first in Race 2, he etched his name into GT Open history as the 200th race winner since the championship began in 2006. The achievement came as a surprise even to the driver himself, who learned of the milestone in a rather ordinary setting.
“I was washing my car when I got a call and was told I’m the 200th driver to win a GT Open race. I thought, ‘Wow, that’s pretty cool!’”
The result marked his first win in the series, while teammate Dean Macdonald added another success to his growing record. Together, they delivered a composed and effective performance that underlined Greystone GT’s competitiveness at the season opener.
A rapid rise through GT Racing
Meakin’s journey to this milestone reflects both talent and progression. Despite the GT Open having started years before his birth, he has quickly established himself within the championship. His early career included competing in British GT before stepping up to international competition in 2025.
“The GT Open is a really good championship, very competitive and with close racing, I’m not sure people realize how tough it is”, he says. The mid-term objective is to become a factory driver. In the meantime, I’m completely focused on the GT Open, and we’ll do everything to be among those who’ll be fighting for the title.”
His development has been closely linked to McLaren machinery, first with Optimum Motorsport and now with Greystone GT. Moreover, his performances demonstrate a driver capable of adapting quickly and competing at a high level.
Momentum builds for 2026
The Portimão weekend formed part of a broader run of strong results for Meakin. Earlier in the year, he secured victory in the Portimão 6 Hours, and he now looks ahead to further challenges, including a debut at the Spa 24 Hours. These opportunities underline his growing reputation within endurance and GT racing.
Despite the milestone, Meakin remains grounded and focused on future success.
“I’ll try to keep the number of race winners at 200”, he added jokingly.
Although the comment reflects humour, it also highlights his determination to continue winning. With confidence building and experience growing, he appears well positioned to challenge for further victories throughout the season.
As the season progresses, Meakin will aim to build on his Portimão success while pursuing his long-term goal of becoming a factory driver. His historic win not only marks a personal breakthrough but also signals the arrival of a new contender in the GT Open landscape.
Ultimately, the 2026 season opener has provided both excitement and significance, with Zac Meakin’s achievement standing as one of its defining moments.
