The Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO) has confirmed that cycling legend Sir Mark Cavendish will serve as the official starter for the 2026 edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The British cyclist, widely regarded as one of the greatest sprinters in road racing history, will wave the French flag to begin the iconic endurance race on Saturday, 13 June at 16:00 local time. In doing so, Cavendish joins an illustrious group of global sporting figures who have previously performed the same honour at Le Mans.

The announcement further strengthens the connection between two of France’s most famous sporting institutions — the Tour de France and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Cavendish’s remarkable sporting legacy

Cavendish arrives at Le Mans as one of cycling’s most celebrated figures. Across an extraordinary career, he rewrote the record books by securing 35 Tour de France stage victories between 2008 and 2024, the highest total ever achieved in the race’s history.

His achievements earned him worldwide recognition and eventually a Knighthood in 2024, when he became a Knight Commander of the British Empire.

Known universally as the ‘Manx Missile’, Cavendish built a particularly strong relationship with France throughout his career. Time and again, he dominated sprint finishes on French roads while inspiring generations of cyclists through his aggressive racing style and relentless competitiveness.

Importantly, the ACO believes those qualities strongly align with the spirit of Le Mans itself.

Cavendish reflects on the honour of starting Le Mans

Cavendish spoke warmly about his connection with France and explained why the opportunity to start the 24 Hours of Le Mans carries such significance for him.

“France and I go back a long way,” acknowledged Cavendish, commonly regarded as cycling’s greatest road sprinter of all time. “The Tour taught me everything I know about pain, glory and pushing your limits. Some competitions transcend their discipline – they belong to all sports fans everywhere. The 24 Hours of Le Mans is one of them. It’s a temple of sport, and I’m looking forward to experiencing the start from the inside.”

His comments highlight the similarities between elite cycling and endurance racing. Both disciplines demand resilience, precision, sacrifice, and the ability to perform under immense physical and mental pressure.

Furthermore, Cavendish’s admiration for Le Mans reflects the event’s unique status within global sport, extending far beyond motorsport alone.

Joining a prestigious list of sporting icons

By taking on the starter role, Cavendish follows several internationally renowned athletes who have previously opened the famous endurance race.

Over recent years, Le Mans has welcomed some of the world’s biggest sporting names to perform the ceremonial duty, including tennis legends Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, football icon Zinédine Zidane, and NBA superstar LeBron James. Consequently, Cavendish’s selection continues Le Mans’ tradition of celebrating athletes whose influence extends well beyond their own discipline.

ACO President Pierre Fillon praised the Briton’s competitive spirit and global profile while confirming the decision.

“Sir Mark Cavendish is an outstanding sportsman and a fitting starter for our 94th 24-hour race,” commented ACO President, Pierre Fillon. “He stands for all that this event holds dear – dazzling performance and shared passion.”

As anticipation builds towards next month’s event, Cavendish’s involvement adds another high-profile moment to one of motorsport’s most historic occasions.
