BMW finally secured its long-awaited breakthrough victory in the 2026 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) Hypercar category after producing a superb strategic performance during the 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps.

Despite starting only tenth and 11th on the grid, the two BMW M Hybrid V8 prototypes transformed their fortunes through aggressive strategy calls, exceptional race pace, and flawless execution across the six-hour contest. Ultimately, the #20 crew of Sheldon van der Linde, René Rast, and Robin Frijns converted that approach into a landmark overall victory, while the sister #15 entry completed a dominant 1-2 result for the German manufacturer.

The triumph marked several major milestones simultaneously. Van der Linde became the first South African driver to win outright in FIA WEC, Team WRT celebrated its maiden overall victory in the championship, and BMW secured its first major global endurance racing success since the 1999 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Bold strategy transforms BMW’s race at the 2026 WEC 6 Hours of Spa

BMW entered the race facing a difficult challenge after a disappointing qualifying session left both Hypercars buried deep in the 17-car field. However, the team immediately adopted an aggressive strategy during the opening round of pit stops.

A bold short-fuelling approach vaulted the #20 BMW to the front of the order, allowing van der Linde, Rast, and Frijns to exploit clear air at the head of the field. Once released from traffic, the trio consistently produced rapid lap times and gradually extended their advantage.

Crucially, a Virtual Safety Car intervention during the fourth hour arrived at the perfect moment for the #20 crew, helping them synchronise their strategy with rivals while maintaining track position. From that point onwards, BMW controlled the race.

An emotional victory backed by years of work

For van der Linde, the emotional victory represented the culmination of years of work within BMW’s Hypercar programme.

“It’s a fairytale story,” mused the 26-year-old BMW factory driver while speaking to FIA WEC.“I’m over-the-moon! Honestly, I’m so proud of the boys, who kept calm throughout and did an outstanding job. We’ve waited a long time – this is now the third year of the Hypercar programme, and we’ve been close on a few occasions. I think it came at the perfect point.

“We scored our first podium last year at Imola with the same kind of strategy, where I was in clean air at the end. Starting down the grid, we needed to do something special [at Spa], and that was what made the difference. We knew it was a risk, and if the Virtual Safety Car had come out at the beginning of my stint, we would probably have been at the back, but it really paid off in the end.

“This is my first world championship podium. These two boys next to me [Rast and Frijns] have had a lot of them already, but it’s my first, so it’s really emotional.”

Team WRT and BMW achieve major milestones

The result carried additional significance for Belgian squad Team WRT, whose headquarters sit less than an hour away from Spa-Francorchamps near Liège. Competing on home soil, the team celebrated its first overall FIA WEC victory in spectacular fashion.

At the same time, BMW became the eighth manufacturer to claim an outright race win since the championship launched in 2012. The achievement also underlined the progress made through the extensive winter development programme applied to the M Hybrid V8 under the Evo Joker regulations.

Prior to Spa, the car had scored only a single championship point from its previous appearances at the Ardennes circuit. However, the updated package immediately demonstrated major gains in race pace and consistency.

Roos praises scale of achievement

BMW M Motorsport boss Andreas Roos praised the scale of the achievement and highlighted the effort invested behind the scenes to elevate the programme to a winning level.

“Both cars at the very front and all six of our drivers on the podium – it doesn’t get any better than that!” enthused Roos, reflecting upon the company’s first major triumph in global endurance racing since the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1999. “I can only be thankful to everybody involved in the project – we can all be very proud.

“It was a big effort from the get-go when we decided to enter the Hypercar category in FIA WEC. This is a fantastic success and a huge relief after all the hard work we’ve put in over the past years.

“We have worked a lot on the Evo update, especially regarding race pace, to make the car more consistent and predictable. That was one of the keys at Spa, because as soon as we had a clear track ahead of us, we were able to set very fast lap times and pull away. The #15 drivers also did an amazing job to finish second. Congratulations to both crews. Now, let’s try to build upon this!”

Importantly, BMW also joined Audi, Cadillac, and Rebellion as one of the few manufacturers to back up a maiden FIA WEC victory with second place in the same race.

Momentum building ahead of Le Mans

Beyond the historic result itself, the timing of BMW’s breakthrough could hardly have been better. With the 24 Hours of Le Mans approaching rapidly, the Spa victory provides enormous momentum and confidence heading into the biggest race of the endurance racing season.

Team WRT principal Vincent Vosse admitted the result exceeded even the squad’s own expectations for its home event.

“We couldn’t have dreamt of a better home race – I’m super happy and incredibly pleased for the whole team,” echoed Vosse. “The drivers did a perfect job, and the team was fantastic with the right strategy calls at the right time. Next up is the big highlight of the season at Le Mans, and we couldn’t be going there with a better feeling!”

After years of development, setbacks, and near-misses, BMW now heads to Le Mans not merely as a contender, but as a proven FIA WEC race winner with genuine momentum behind its Hypercar programme.
