Kimi Antonelli claimed victory at the 2026 F1 Canadian GP after surviving changing weather conditions, multiple Virtual Safety Cars, and a fierce battle with Mercedes teammate George Russell. The 19-year-old secured his fourth consecutive victory of the season. He finished ahead of Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen, extending his lead in the Drivers’ Championship.
The race began in difficult conditions after rain arrived ahead of the start. Mercedes chose to begin on slick tyres, while both McLarens gambled on intermediates. That decision quickly backfired as the track dried rapidly. Antonelli and Russell soon found themselves locked in an intense wheel-to-wheel battle for the lead. However, the fight came to an abrupt end when Russell retired with a power unit failure on lap 30.
Antonelli breaks down his battle with Russell at the 2026 F1 Canadian GP
Speaking during the post-race track interviews, Antonelli described the fight with Russell as one of the most intense battles of the season so far. Gusty winds and difficult braking conditions added another layer of difficulty for both Mercedes drivers.
Before answering, Antonelli took a moment to thank the fans in attendance: “Yeah, first of all, thank you everyone for coming this weekend.”
“It was a really fun battle, to be fair, with George. We were pretty much on the limit and it was not easy today with the wind, very gusty. Turn 10 was very difficult.”
Antonelli then explained how quickly the lead changed hands during the opening stint as both drivers pushed to the limit. “I think one lap he locked up, then I went in front, and then I locked up, so it was very close.”
Despite ultimately benefiting from Russell’s retirement, Antonelli admitted he would have preferred to settle the battle on track.
“It was a shame for him to have the failure because it would have been a very cool battle but, yeah, we’ll take it. Another win and I’m very happy, and a massive thanks of course to the team,” Antonelli stated.
Managing tyre graining after Russell’s retirement
Once Russell pulled over with a technical issue, Antonelli suddenly found himself leading comfortably. Hamilton and Verstappen were several seconds behind and no longer within immediate striking distance. However, Antonelli’s victory at the 2026 F1 Canadian GP was still not straightforward. Front-left graining began to appear during the middle phase of the race, making tyre management much more complicated.
“Well, when I was on my own I was trying to really manage the tyres because I started to have some graining. Some graining started to appear on the front left,” Antonelli stated.
Antonelli described the tyre behaviour as unusual, with the grip level changing as temperatures evolved across the stint. Yet, with another victory secured, Antonelli quickly shifted his focus towards the next round of the championship.
“It was just a weird feeling, the tyre was not really biting but, yeah, at the end we had a good pace once the temperature was coming in and, yeah, now looking forward to the next one.”
Antonelli on the satisfaction of his victory at the 2026 F1 Canadian GP
During the FIA press conference, Antonelli admitted the circumstances of the victory felt slightly bittersweet. The fight with Russell had been developing into one of the standout battles of the 2026 season. However, Russell’s retirement ended the contest before either driver could settle it properly on track.
“It was nice to end the weekend well. Of course, it was not really the way I wanted to win, because it was a close fight with George and I think would have gone all the way until the end.”
Antonelli acknowledged the unpredictable nature of F1 and stressed the importance of taking points whenever the opportunity presents itself.
“But of course we’ll take it and this time it went well for me and bad for him, and it might be another occasion where it goes bad for me and well for him.”
The Mercedes driver maintained his calm approach despite extending his championship advantage further. “So, yeah, we’ve just got to keep maximising and take every opportunity that presents. And, yeah, now we’ll move forward,” he stated.
Antonelli discusses the strategy battle with Russell
Asked how the race strategy might have unfolded without Russell’s retirement, Antonelli suggested he had begun gaining an advantage as tyre degradation started to differ between the two cars late in the stint.
“I think at the end of the stint I had a little bit the upper hand because I had a little bit more pace. I think he had a bit more pace initially but then he deg’d a little bit more, but it would have been very close.”
Even with the victory confirmed, Antonelli could not help but reflect on what might have been had the fight run its full course.
“And of course it was not good to see him having the failure because, as I said, it would have been a very intense fight all the way until the end. It would have been interesting to see how it would have ended up but, yeah, definitely it was difficult to say.”
Antonelli describes the fight as “pretty entertaining”
Beyond the strategy element, Antonelli was asked directly about the quality of the on-track battle with Russell. The fight involved several lock-ups, side-by-side moments through the chicane and multiple lead changes. Antonelli felt both drivers had earned credit for how they raced.
“It was a tough fight. I think a couple of times was maybe a little bit on the edge, but we were going at each other. We were both pushing and we both wanted to win. And it was, I think, for everyone watching, pretty entertaining. So definitely I think the stint was a lot of fun because we were both pushing on the limit and going for it,” Antonelli stated.
Antonelli cautious about conclusions on Mercedes’ upgrades
Mercedes introduced a significant upgrade package ahead of the 2026 F1 Canadian GP weekend. Antonelli remained cautious about drawing firm conclusions, however, given how unusual the weekend proved to be from a tyre perspective.
“Yeah, to be fair, we’re not really clear on the package, if I’m being honest, because this weekend was very weird in terms of tyres,” he stated.
Drivers across the field struggled to bring the tyres into the ideal operating window, making it difficult to isolate the true performance of the Mercedes upgrade. “It was very difficult to put them in the right window and so I think that was playing a big factor.”
When the tyres were working correctly, the gains were visible on the timesheets. Antonelli felt the sample size from Montreal was too limited to be conclusive. “Just by having the tyre in the right window was helping a lot. So I think we will have a better picture of the package in the next few races,” Antonelli stated.
Antonelli reacts to McLaren’s intermediate tyre gamble at the 2026 F1 Canadian GP
Changing weather conditions before the 2026 F1 Canadian GP created major uncertainty on the grid. While Mercedes committed to slicks, McLaren gambled on intermediates, creating one of the race’s biggest strategic contrasts.
Antonelli explained that although the rain briefly intensified ahead of the start, Mercedes remained confident that conditions would improve quickly enough for slick tyres to remain viable.
“It was so difficult. It was not easy situation because it started to drizzle a little bit harder. You could see it was starting to get a little bit wet but we knew, at least we were quite confident that it wouldn’t have lasted that long and that you could survive. So obviously went for slicks. And of course I was surprised to see the McLarens on inters, especially because I think they were the only ones.”
Antonelli acknowledged the logic behind the decision, even as conditions moved against McLaren almost immediately. “So, of course, it was a massive gamble and of course if it would have started raining it was very good for them, but it didn’t.”
Even with the correct tyre choice made, the opening laps still placed demands on Antonelli. “So, yeah, of course it was not the best. But the start was not easy, especially very easy to lock up, kerbs were a little bit sketchy in the first, at least first couple of laps. So it was not easy condition but then once the car started running, the track was fully dry after a few laps and was fine to race,” Antonelli concluded.
Antonelli’s victory in Montreal marked his fourth consecutive win of the 2026 F1 season. The result further extended his championship lead and strengthened his position at the top of the standings.
