McLaren will place its history, customer racing programme and Hypercar future at the centre of the 2027 24 Hours of Le Mans. The British marque will make its debut in the top class with two McLaren MCL-HY Hypercars, while McLaren GT3 EVOs will also represent the manufacturer in LMGT3. However, its presence will extend well beyond the main endurance race.
McLaren Trophy Europe will contest rounds three and four of its season during the Le Mans weekend. The two support races will bring Trophy, GT3 and GT4 competitors together, creating the largest competitive gathering of McLaren GT racing cars to date.
McLaren Trophy Europe joins the 2027 Le Mans programme
The 2027 McLaren Trophy Europe season will include one of its most significant events when the championship visits the Circuit de la Sarthe. Rounds three and four will take place before the 95th running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, giving Trophy competitors the opportunity to race at one of motorsport’s most recognisable venues.
Furthermore, McLaren will open the event to guest entries from McLaren Trophy America. Teams running current McLaren GT3 EVO and GT4-specification customer racing cars will also join the multi-class contest.
As a result, the support races will represent more than another round of the European championship. Instead, McLaren will use them to unite several areas of its global customer racing operation.
Nick Collins, CEO of McLaren Automotive, believes the expanded programme will make the manufacturer’s Hypercar debut even more significant.
“To have McLaren Trophy Europe racing at Le Mans in 2027, the year we make our debut in the Hypercar class, will make the event incredibly special. The fact that it will also be an invitational race for our GT3 and GT4 clients, as well as open to our McLaren Trophy America competitors, will mark this out as a true celebration of McLaren. What better place than Le Mans – part of our Triple Crown legacy – to recognise this.”
An unprecedented gathering of McLaren GT machinery
The multi-class structure will create the largest gathering of McLaren GT racing cars ever assembled in competition. McLaren Trophy Europe already gives drivers the opportunity to compete in machinery designed around the marque’s customer racing philosophy. However, the addition of GT3 EVO and GT4 entries will broaden the field considerably.
Meanwhile, guest competitors from McLaren Trophy America will connect the manufacturer’s European and North American racing communities. That invitational element will also give drivers from different championships the opportunity to share the same circuit and race-week environment.
Therefore, the event will showcase the full scale of McLaren’s customer racing programme rather than focusing solely on one championship.
The format will also give McLaren clients a direct role in an important weekend for the company. While the factory Hypercars challenge at the front of the main event, customer teams will compete across the Trophy, GT3 and GT4 categories.
MCL-HY prepares to lead McLaren’s top-class return
McLaren Racing will enter two MCL-HY Hypercars in the 2027 24 Hours of Le Mans, marking the marque’s arrival in the current top class. The programme will give McLaren the opportunity to fight for overall honours with a highly developed prototype. At the same time, the manufacturer’s GT3 EVO entries will contest the LMGT3 category.
Consequently, McLaren will operate across several levels of the event. The MCL-HY will represent the company’s most advanced endurance racing project, while the GT3 EVOs will continue its customer-led presence in GT competition.
The Trophy Europe support races will add another layer to that programme. Together, the different categories will give fans the opportunity to follow McLaren machinery throughout the week rather than only during the 24-hour race.
McLaren will therefore use its Hypercar debut as the centrepiece of a much wider racing celebration.
ACO welcomes McLaren’s expanded presence
The Automobile Club de l’Ouest has welcomed McLaren Trophy Europe to the 2027 schedule as preparations continue for the 95th edition of the race.
McLaren already holds an important place within the history of Le Mans. However, its return to the top class and expanded customer racing presence will allow the marque to begin a new chapter at the circuit.
Pierre Fillon, President of the Automobile Club de l’Ouest, believes the combination of Hypercar, GT and Trophy machinery will strengthen an already significant edition of the race.
“Welcoming McLaren Trophy Europe to Le Mans in 2027 will add another strong dimension to what is already shaping up to be a very special edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. McLaren is part of the history of our race, and its return to the top class with the MCL-HY is a powerful symbol of the momentum currently driving endurance racing. Bringing together Hypercar, GT3, GT4 and McLaren Trophy competitors during the same week will create a unique celebration for the brand, its customers and the fans. Le Mans has always been a place where heritage and the future meet, and this announcement perfectly reflects that spirit.”
Fillon’s comments underline the importance of McLaren’s return within the wider growth of endurance racing. The manufacturer will not simply add another Hypercar to the field. Instead, it will bring professional drivers, customer teams and Trophy competitors together during the same race week.
Customer racing takes a central role
McLaren’s 2027 programme will place its customers alongside the company’s leading factory racing project. The GT3 EVO and GT4 invitations will allow established McLaren teams to participate in a dedicated race at Le Mans. Trophy America drivers will also gain the opportunity to compete against the European championship field as guest entrants.
Moreover, the support races will strengthen the link between McLaren’s regional Trophy competitions. The European and American drivers usually compete in separate championships, but Le Mans will provide a shared stage. That combination will create a broader competitive field while also celebrating the people who operate and race McLaren machinery around the world.
The manufacturer will consequently present its customer racing structure as a fundamental part of its motorsport identity rather than a secondary feature of the weekend.
Heritage and future meet at Le Mans
McLaren will arrive at the 2027 24 Hours of Le Mans with machinery representing several stages of its racing operation.
The Trophy cars will highlight its driver-focused customer championships. The GT4 and GT3 EVO models will demonstrate the range of its established GT racing platform. Finally, the two MCL-HY Hypercars will lead its pursuit of success at the highest level of endurance racing.
Together, the different cars will create a direct link between McLaren’s heritage and its future ambitions.
Le Mans also carries additional meaning for McLaren because of its place within the marque’s Triple Crown legacy. Therefore, the circuit provides a fitting setting for the company to launch its latest top-class programme while celebrating its wider racing community.
McLaren prepares for a defining 2027 race week
The 95th 24 Hours of Le Mans will offer far more than McLaren’s first appearance in the Hypercar class.
Across the week, the British marque will compete with Trophy cars, GT4 machinery, GT3 EVOs and highly developed MCL-HY prototypes. Teams from Europe and America will also come together as McLaren builds its largest competitive gathering of GT racing cars.
The support events will celebrate the strength of McLaren’s customer programmes, while the main race will place the manufacturer against the leading teams in endurance racing.
Ultimately, McLaren will use Le Mans to connect its history with an ambitious new era. Its 2027 programme will not focus on one car or one race alone. Instead, it will bring the marque’s full racing spectrum to one of motorsport’s most important stages.
