Fionn McLaughlin delivered his strongest Qualifying performance of the 2026 F3 season at Silverstone, securing sixth place for Hitech after a composed and competitive Friday.
The Red Bull junior showed pace from the start of the day, finishing sixth in Free Practice before carrying that form into Qualifying. Across each run, McLaughlin kept himself inside the top 10 and built towards a final lap that placed him firmly among the leading contenders.
His 1:45.933 left him 0.313s behind polesitter Freddie Slater. However, the margins behind the front row remained extremely tight, with McLaughlin finishing less than a tenth away from Théophile Naël in second place.
McLaughlin pleased after Silverstone breakthrough
McLaughlin welcomed the result after producing his first top-10 Qualifying performance of the season. The Hitech driver had struggled to convert his pace into a strong starting position earlier in the campaign, but Silverstone offered him a familiar venue and a better opportunity to maximise his package.
He also felt comfortable with the car throughout Friday. That gave him the confidence to keep pushing during a closely contested Qualifying session, where every small mistake risked a major loss of positions.
“It’s a good start to the weekend. Very happy with the team and the car felt good. It’s the track that I know best in the calendar, so it was a venue that I needed to make the most out of but it was so tough today,” he said while speaking to Formula 3.
McLaughlin acknowledges a tight field in Silverstone F3 Qualifying
The result underlined how close the 2026 F3 field was around Silverstone. Although McLaughlin qualified sixth, he remained within striking distance of the front row and only needed a small gain to climb several places higher.
That narrow spread made the performance even more valuable. Rather than overdriving in search of a marginal improvement, McLaughlin focused on executing his lap cleanly and taking the result available to him.
“The Qualifying was so close, another half a tenth would have put me P2, so it was pretty crazy. I just made sure that I did the best I could and that’s what I did.
Silverstone also carried personal significance for McLaughlin. He spent considerable time at the circuit during his Formula 4 campaign, and the British Grand Prix weekend gave him the chance to perform in front of a supportive crowd, including Irish fans following his progress.
That support added another positive element to a breakthrough Friday. After several difficult Qualifying sessions earlier in the season, McLaughlin viewed the result as a timely lift before the races.
“It’s close to home. I spent a lot of time here when I was in F4 last year so it was nice. I’ve seen a lot of Irish fans here too and I’m happy that I made something out of their day. I’m very happy and its good confidence boost too.”
Hitech driver controls pressure in one-lap format
The Qualifying format placed additional pressure on the drivers, as each competitor had only one push lap on each set of tyres. That left little room to recover from a mistake, traffic issue or poor tyre preparation.
McLaughlin said the key was to control his emotions and avoid letting the pressure change his approach. With the Silverstone lap demanding commitment through high-speed corners, he needed to stay calm while still driving close to the limit.
“You need nerves of steel in a way,” he said. “It’s not very nice to always be in that edge of the limit. But I felt like I controlled myself quite well and managed my expectations as well.
His strong Free Practice result could have increased expectations before Qualifying. However, McLaughlin used it as a platform rather than a distraction. He kept his attention on his own execution and concentrated on extracting the most from the car when it mattered.
That approach helped him build a complete Friday. By matching his Free Practice position in Qualifying, he showed both single-lap speed and the composure needed to deliver under pressure.
“Obviously FP went well and I just made sure that all I focused on was me. I just made sure in my head that I was going to maximise my lap and I just kept that throughout the week.”

Points target comes into focus
McLaughlin’s sixth-place Qualifying result gives him a strong opportunity to fight for points across the Silverstone weekend. With track position secured, he now needs to convert that starting position into race results.
The next stage of preparation will focus on data analysis, race pace and mental readiness. Silverstone can produce close racing, especially through slipstreaming and braking zones, so McLaughlin expects to remain alert to opportunities and threats during both races.
“I’m just going to analyse things as much as I can, and be prepared mentally and ready as well,” said McLaughlin.
After a challenging start to the season, McLaughlin now has a realistic chance to open or strengthen his points account. Nevertheless, he knows the races can change quickly, so he plans to stay aggressive while continuing to focus on improvement.
His target remains clear: race hard, stay composed and turn his strongest Qualifying result of the year into a meaningful weekend.
“I feel like you can expect anything but I’m going to race hard, try to get the best result and try to get some points this year. I’ll focus on improving and I hope I just have a good end to the week.”
Silverstone F3 Qualifying performance offers McLaughlin timely momentum
McLaughlin’s Friday at Silverstone marked an important step forward in his F3 campaign. He combined pace in Free Practice with controlled execution in Qualifying, giving himself his best starting position of the season.
The narrow gap to the front row also showed that he had the speed to compete much closer to the sharp end. Moreover, his ability to manage the pressure of limited push laps should provide confidence for future Qualifying sessions.
Hitech now has a strong platform for the races, while McLaughlin enters the rest of the weekend with renewed belief at a circuit where he feels comfortable and supported.
