The worst kept secret in IndyCar is out as Chip Ganassi Racing has signed Christian Lundgaard to drive the legendary #9 car in 2027 and beyond.
Once McLaren made the controversial decision to not renew with the Dane, and the announcement of Scott Dixon leaving CGR to join them, it looked almost inevitable the 25-year-old would go in the other direction.
A really strong 2026 campaign
The 2026 IndyCar season put together by Christian Lundgaard was extremely impressive. A terrific pass on David Malukas won him the race at IMS (road course), and he would go on to take another at Road America following a remarkable comeback drive. The Dane had a puncture following turn 1 contact, benefitting from a late engine failure for Marcus Armstrong to take a second P1 of the season.
Five further podiums, including a first one on an oval at Milwaukee, saw the Dane deservedly finish 3rd in points, 13 ahead of now former Arrow McLaren teammate Pato O’Ward. It backed up his 5th in the standings last year.
Now, Christian Lundgaard faces his biggest test by joining Chip Ganassi Racing. He will go up against five-time and defending series champion Alex Palou next year. Kyffin Simpson remains in the #8.
