Formula 1 and the FIA have announced the official dates for the 2026 pre-season testing calendar, significantly extending the preparation time before a major technical overhaul.

In response to extensive regulatory changes, including new sustainable power units, active aerodynamics, and a higher minimum car weight, teams will now have access to nine days of on-track action spread across three separate testing sessions.

Test 1: A private event in Barcelona

Held from January 26-30 at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, this session offers teams a 5-day window where each team is free to run during any three days.

This test will be a closed-door private testing session, excluding public timings, on-site broadcasters, and media access, allowing all teams to iron out issues in private.

Test 2 & 3: Media Accessible in Bahrain

Held at the Bahrain International Circuit from:

  • February 11-13, 2026
  • February 18-20, 2026

Both tests will be accessible to the media, opening the floor to a traditional form of pre-season testing period where the media are welcomed to observe the performance of all teams.

This newer and expanded testing period marks a significant shift compared to the previous years, where teams only had 3 official days of testing. With the 2026 regulations introducing fully sustainable fuels, eliminating the MGU-H, and enhancing power amplification through the MGU-K, engineering teams will need every moment on the track to refine new systems and address any reliability issues before the season opener.

The 2026 season opener will be in Melbourne, Australia, from March 3-6, 2026. Other changes include the Azerbaijan Grand Prix pushed to Saturday, September 26, rather than Sunday, September 27, to accommodate a national holiday.
