As Formula 1 heads into the unpredictable and high-speed challenge of the Belgian GP at Spa-Francorchamps, the spotlight isn’t just on performance – it’s also on paddock politics and team dynamics. While some top teams are managing internal upheaval and rumours, McLaren stands out for its stability – something Oscar Piastri clearly values.

Piastri on Horner’s departure: “it doesn’t affect me”

One of the biggest headlines this month was Christian Horner’s departure from Red Bull. But for Oscar Piastri, the news holds little relevance.

While the decision to sack the long-time team principal came as a surprise to the Melbourne native, he admitted in his print media session that it will change little for him.

“I learn I guess as everyone else. It doesn’t obviously affect me at all, but it’s obviously a change for Red Bull. I think Christian achieved a lot with the team in terms of championships and whatever else, but for me it really doesn’t affect much.”

Focused on the unpredictability of Spa and his own performance, Piastri made it clear that the off-track drama elsewhere is not his concern.

“I don’t spend much time thinking about it. It’s obviously a bit of a surprise, I guess. It’s obviously a big change, but it doesn’t affect me.”

In contrast to the turbulence affecting other top teams, McLaren’s internal unity is standing out – particularly as they face questions about not designating a number one driver. Despite the team housing two championship contenders, they’ve resisted issuing team orders, choosing instead to let both drivers race freely.

Last season, McLaren faced scrutiny over strategy calls in Hungary. Yet, in the current climate of uncertainty, they’re increasingly seen as a model of composure and consistency. Piastri is certainly aware of the value in that.

With Zak Brown, Andrea Stella and the drivers all tied down to long-term contracts, plus key technical staff, it’s very much a team pushing in the same direction in every area.

“I think so, yes. I’m certainly very happy where I am. I was happy before some of the movements and rumours that are going on, but I think it is a massive strength of ours how united we are, how strong we are as a team, and from so many areas.

“It does make me appreciate it. I already did appreciate it beforehand. Yes, I think the stability is definitely a nice thing.

“I think just with more time in the sport, I’m understanding a bit better that stability is not always that common. So it’s nice to have it at the moment.”

Following his 10-second time penalty at the British GP and with the partly wet Belgian Grand Prix approaching, Piastri’s calm confidence and McLaren’s internal unity could prove decisive in further extending both his and the team’s championship lead. While rivals navigate turbulence both on and off the track, McLaren’s steady approach may be their biggest advantage – aside from their orange rocket ship and talented drivers – heading into one of the most demanding weekends of the season.
