Spa didn’t smile to Red Bull driver Yuki Tsunoda, as he didn’t manage to score once again in the F1 Belgian GP. Consequently, his streak of non-top ten finishes increases to six races in a row, with his latest P10 being achieved at Racing Bull’s home track at Imola.
A sad ending to a positive weekend
Tsunoda had started his F1 Belgian GP weekend rather strongly, by achieving a surprising P7 in Qualifying on Saturday and finally looking closer to teammate Max Verstappen’s speed and pace.
However, his happiness did not last long. In fact, Tsunoda ‘s race was affected by the ever changing track conditions on display during the F1 Belgian GP, unfortunately pitting a lap too late to put on tyres for the drying track.
Race chronicles
The former Racing Bulls driver explained in detail what went wrong for him and his team, as it can all be pinned down to a delayed communication. He recounted after the end of the race.
His engineer Richard Wood told him to box on the same lap as most drivers. The problem was he said it after Tsunoda had just gone past pit entry.
“Well, there was a miscommunication I guess between my myself and the team. I Requested to switch it to the kind of dry tyre and they called me in way too late.”
The pit timing mistake turned into a rather costly and painstakingly slow in lap. That ultimately led him to miss out on yet another points finish.
“Well, I had just unfortunately passed the entry and they called me in, so… Yeah one lap like this kind of condition is very very decisive. I lost my starting position in that stance and I stuck behind up in all the race. So yeah, that was my race.”
Hard pass
Tsunoda concluded highlighting the hardships he encountered while trying to complete on-track moves against Pierre Gasly.
“Well, I try my best overtake but unfortunately, straight line speed was nowhere.
“I requested to… Well, I tried my best to overtake but my tyres were gone. Yeah, it’s very frustrating,” he concluded, upset by the outcome of the race.
