The 2026 Italian F4 Championship continued at the Autodromo Piero Taruffi in Vallelunga, where the second round of the season delivered another packed grid, close Qualifying margins, post-race penalties and a major shift in momentum at the front of the championship.

After PREMA Racing had set the early benchmark at Misano, US Racing responded emphatically in Rome. Luka Sammalisto produced the standout performance of the weekend, winning all three races he contested and adding the Final victory to complete a near-perfect round. Teammate Edward Robinson also claimed his maiden Italian F4 victory, secured double pole in Qualifying and left Vallelunga firmly inside the championship fight.

Championship leader Alp Aksoy remained consistent across the weekend and protected his advantage at the top of the Drivers’ standings. The Turkish PREMA Racing rookie claimed three Rookie class wins and finished the round on 144 points, but Sammalisto’s dominant weekend moved the Finnish driver to within six points of the lead.

David Cosma-Cristofor, Oleksandr Savinkov, David Walther, Ary Bansal and Arjen Kräling also played key roles across the weekend, while US Racing’s depth allowed the German squad to move to the top of the Teams’ Championship ahead of PREMA Racing.

With 44 drivers representing 13 teams, Vallelunga confirmed the strength and unpredictability of the 2026 Italian F4 field. The round also tightened the championship picture considerably, setting up a high-pressure third round at Monza with Aksoy still leading, Sammalisto charging, and US Racing carrying clear momentum.

Busso puts US Racing on top in opening session

Free Practice at Vallelunga immediately confirmed that the second round of the 2026 Italian F4 Championship would continue the close fight seen at Misano. With the field again split into two sessions, the first morning run gave US Racing an early advantage through Ludovico Busso.

The Sicilian driver set the pace in Free Practice 1 Session 1 with a 1:34.943, edging PREMA Racing’s David Cosma-Cristofor by 0.113s. David Walther continued Maffi Racing’s strong start to the season in third, while championship leader Alp Aksoy placed fourth and led the Rookie runners in the session.

Kenzo Craigie also kept R-ace GP near the front in fifth, ahead of Arjen Kräling and McLaren junior Christian Costoya, who set identical gaps to the benchmark. Oleksandr Savinkov, Bader Al Sulaiti and Alex Ruta completed the top 10.

US Racing and PREMA remain closely matched

Across the four Free Practice sessions, US Racing and PREMA Racing again emerged as the leading forces. Busso and Robinson gave US Racing both morning session-toppers, while Cosma-Cristofor’s afternoon benchmark put PREMA back at the front before Qualifying.

Bearman’s late-session pace gave Van Amersfoort Racing a major positive, while Walther, Craigie, Severiukhin, Repetto and Consani all showed enough speed to suggest the fight behind the two leading teams would remain extremely competitive.

Robinson’s 1:34.827 stood as the fastest lap of the morning, but Cosma-Cristofor’s 1:34.561 in the afternoon became the quickest Free Practice time overall, giving PREMA a narrow edge heading into the evening Qualifying sessions.

Robinson confirms US Racing pace

Friday at Vallelunga concluded with Qualifying, after Free Practice had already shown how closely matched the leading contenders were across the two groups. The session confirmed US Racing’s strength, as Edward Robinson delivered the fastest lap overall and secured two pole positions for the weekend.

The Spanish-British driver set a 1’34.378 in Qualifying Session 2, enough to claim pole for both Race 2 and Race 3 under the group rotation format. It was Robinson’s first pole position in the Italian F4 Championship and capped off an impressive Friday after he had already shown strong pace in Free Practice.

However, Race 1 pole went to David Cosma-Cristofor. The PREMA Racing driver topped Qualifying Session 1 with a 1’34.523, continuing his strong Vallelunga form after already taking a pole position at the circuit in 2025. He finished 0.080s ahead of Maffi Racing’s David Walther, while Alex Ruta placed third for Van Amersfoort Racing.

Cosma-Cristofor edges tight Session 1

Session 1 was extremely close at the front. Cosma-Cristofor’s benchmark gave PREMA pole for the opening race, but Walther was only 0.080s behind, with Ruta 0.154s away in third.

Championship leader Alp Aksoy continued his consistent start to the weekend by qualifying fourth in the session, also leading the Rookie runners. Behind him, US Racing placed three cars in succession, with Arjen Kräling fifth, Oleksandr Savinkov sixth and Noah Killion seventh.

McLaren junior Christian Costoya took eighth for PREMA, ahead of Mercedes junior Kenzo Craigie and Trident Motorsport’s Florentin Hattemer, who completed the top 10.

Groups formed for the opening races

With the combined Qualifying order set, Robinson was assigned to Group A, Cosma-Cristofor to Group B and Sammalisto to Group C. That gave Robinson pole for Race 2 and Race 3, while Cosma-Cristofor would lead the field away in Race 1. The combined results placed Robinson fastest overall, followed by Cosma-Cristofor, Sammalisto, Walther, Consani, Ruta, Maccagnani, Aksoy, Severiukhin and Kräling.

Sammalisto converts strong Qualifying into victory

Race 1 at Vallelunga opened Saturday’s competitive action with Groups B and C on track, bringing together Race 1 polesitter David Cosma-Cristofor and US Racing’s Luka Sammalisto. Although Cosma-Cristofor had earned pole from Qualifying Session 1, it was Sammalisto who emerged strongest over the 16-lap race.

The Finnish US Racing driver controlled the race to take victory, completing the 65.360 km distance in 27’17.078. He also set the fastest lap of the race with a 1’34.818 on lap 13, underlining the pace that would become one of the defining themes of the Vallelunga weekend.

Behind him, the final order changed significantly after the Stewards issued post-race penalties. Cosma-Cristofor had crossed the line in the podium places, but a 10-second penalty for contact that caused Alex Ruta’s puncture dropped the Romanian PREMA Racing driver to eighth overall. Thomas Bearman was also given a five-second penalty for an overtaking move on Ary Bansal that forced the US Racing driver off track.

US Racing profits as Savinkov is promoted

The penalties promoted Oleksandr Savinkov to second place, completing a US Racing one-two. The Ukrainian finished 2.878s behind Sammalisto in the revised classification and narrowly ahead of championship leader Alp Aksoy, who inherited third place for PREMA Racing.

Aksoy’s podium was also the Rookie victory, continuing his perfect start in the class. Roman Kamyab finished fifth overall and second among the Rookies, while Florentin Hattemer completed the Rookie podium in seventh overall.

Noah Killion added further points for US Racing in fourth, while Bader Al Sulaiti finished sixth for Jenzer Motorsport. After their penalties, Cosma-Cristofor and Bearman were classified eighth and ninth respectively, with Ary Bansal completing the top 10.

The race also featured a drive-through penalty for Nicolas Cortes after he was judged responsible for causing a collision. Pedro Lima was the only retirement from the race.

Penalties shape the final picture

Race 1 immediately established several of the weekend’s key themes. Sammalisto had the pace to fight at the very front, US Racing had strength in numbers, and Aksoy remained highly efficient in both the overall and Rookie standings.

For PREMA, the result was more complicated. Aksoy’s podium limited the damage, and Kamyab’s fifth was a strong result on his Italian F4 Championship debut weekend, but Cosma-Cristofor’s penalty turned a potential podium into eighth place. With Sammalisto taking full points and fastest lap, Vallelunga had already begun to tighten the championship fight.

Robinson fights back after difficult start
Race 2 at Vallelunga brought Groups A and B together, with Edward Robinson starting from pole position for US Racing after setting the fastest overall lap in Qualifying. The Spanish-British driver did not have the cleanest launch, suffering wheelspin off the line and initially losing the lead.

Niccolò Maccagnani moved into contention and led much of the race, while Andy Consani also became a major factor after a strong opening lap from sixth on the grid. Robinson, however, stayed in the fight and reclaimed the lead with a decisive move around the outside of Maccagnani in the closing stages.

From there, Robinson controlled the final laps to take his maiden Italian F4 Championship victory. He completed the 15-lap race in 27’48.340, giving US Racing another major result after Luka Sammalisto’s Race 1 win.

Consani penalty promotes Cosma-Cristofor and Kräling
Although Consani crossed the line second on the road, the final classification changed after the Stewards issued a 25-second penalty for his incident with Maccagnani. The clash effectively ended Maccagnani’s hopes of fighting for victory, and the Ferrari Driver Academy driver eventually finished three laps down.

The penalty dropped Consani to 21st and promoted David Cosma-Cristofor to second place. After losing a Race 1 podium to a penalty, the Romanian PREMA Racing driver finally secured a confirmed top-three finish at Vallelunga.

Arjen Kräling also benefited from the revised order, moving up to third for US Racing. Alp Aksoy finished fourth for PREMA Racing and again won the Rookie classification, continuing his perfect run in the class across the weekend.

Aksoy continues Rookie control

Aksoy’s fourth place added more important championship points and strengthened his position at the top of the Rookie standings. Oscar Repetto finished sixth overall and second among the Rookies for PHM Racing, while Kwan Ho Kingsley Zheng completed the Rookie podium in seventh overall.

Thomas Bearman finished fifth for Van Amersfoort Racing after another solid run near the front. Florentin Hattemer, Knud Nielsen and Ludovico Busso completed the top 10, with Lyuboslav Ruykov just outside in 11th.

Elia Weiss was also penalised after the race, receiving a 10-second penalty for contact with Dominik Simek. That dropped the Jenzer Motorsport driver to 19th in the final classification. Grid penalties were also issued for Race 3, with Augustus Toniolo receiving a six-place drop and Fabricio Fogaça receiving a total 10-place penalty after separate Race 2 incidents.

Robinson strengthens US Racing momentum
Race 2 reinforced US Racing’s growing control of the Vallelunga weekend. Robinson converted pole into victory despite early wheelspin, Kräling joined him on the revised podium, and Busso added further points inside the top 10.

For PREMA Racing, the race brought mixed fortunes. Cosma-Cristofor recovered from his Race 1 disappointment with second place, while Aksoy continued to score heavily and extend his Rookie run. However, Maccagnani’s damaged race and Costoya’s retirement limited the team’s overall haul.

With Robinson joining Sammalisto as a Vallelunga winner, US Racing had taken both Saturday victories and placed itself firmly on the front foot heading into Sunday.

Sammalisto takes control from the start

Race 3 opened the final day of the Vallelunga weekend with Groups A and C on track. Edward Robinson started from pole position for US Racing, but the still-cold track conditions created wheelspin at the start and allowed teammate Luka Sammalisto to immediately move into the lead.

From there, Sammalisto controlled the race at the front. Robinson remained close throughout and finished just 0.532s behind, giving US Racing another one-two finish. David Walther held third from the start for Maffi Racing, completing the overall podium after resisting pressure from Artem Severiukhin.

The race was interrupted by multiple incidents. Alex Ruta and Niccolò Maccagnani were involved in contact while fighting near the front, which ended with both drivers retiring. Later, PREMA Racing teammates Christian Costoya and Roman Kamyab were also caught up in a separate clash. A final incident involving Bernardo Bernoldi, Roland Kuklane and Augustus Toniolo left cars stranded in the gravel, bringing out the Safety Car and leaving the race to finish under neutralised conditions.

Craigie charges to Rookie victory

Behind the podium finishers, Severiukhin finished fourth for Jenzer Motorsport after spending much of the race close to Walther but unable to complete a move for third. Kenzo Craigie delivered one of the standout drives of the race, climbing to fifth overall from 12th on the grid and taking Rookie victory for R-ACE GP.

Craigie also set the fastest lap of the race with a 1’34.985 on lap eight, underlining the pace behind his recovery drive. Ary Bansal finished sixth for US Racing ahead of teammate Ludovico Busso, while Oscar Repetto placed eighth overall and second among the Rookies.

Oleksandr Bondarev finished ninth as the only PREMA Racing driver to reach the chequered flag, while Elia Weiss completed the top 10 for Jenzer Motorsport. Knud Nielsen finished 12th overall and completed the Rookie podium behind Craigie and Repetto.

Sammalisto strengthens his title charge
Race 3 further shifted the momentum towards US Racing. Sammalisto had now won both races he had contested at Vallelunga, while Robinson added another second place after his Race 2 victory. The team’s depth was also clear, with Bansal, Busso and Savinkov all inside the points.

For PREMA Racing, Race 3 was particularly difficult. Maccagnani, Costoya, Kamyab and Ruta were all involved in incidents, while Bondarev was the team’s only finisher. That made Sammalisto’s second win even more significant in the championship picture, while Craigie’s charge gave R-ACE GP a major Rookie result before the Final.

Sammalisto leads US Racing one-two in the Final

The Final at Vallelunga brought the best 36 drivers from the opening three races together for the last contest of the weekend. After already winning Race 1 and Race 3, Luka Sammalisto carried his momentum into the decisive race and converted it into another victory.

The Finnish US Racing driver controlled the 15-lap race from the front, completing the 61.275 km distance in 27’15.354. He also set the fastest lap of the race with a 1’34.962 on lap 15, sealing a dominant end to the weekend.

Edward Robinson finished second, 1.720s behind his teammate, completing another US Racing one-two. After claiming pole and winning Race 2, the Spanish-British driver left Vallelunga as one of the biggest winners of the weekend alongside Sammalisto.

Cosma-Cristofor returns to the podium

David Cosma-Cristofor completed the overall podium for PREMA Racing in third. The Romanian driver had finished inside the top three on track in all three races he contested, although his Race 1 penalty had cost him a confirmed podium in the opening race.

Alp Aksoy finished fourth and again led the Rookie runners, completing a strong damage-limitation weekend as he continued to score heavily in both the overall and Rookie standings. Oleksandr Savinkov placed fifth for US Racing after applying pressure to Aksoy during the race, while David Walther finished sixth for Maffi Racing.

Thomas Bearman finished seventh for Van Amersfoort Racing, ahead of Kenzo Craigie, who took second in the Rookie classification. Ary Bansal and Arjen Kräling completed the top 10, giving US Racing five cars inside the first ten positions.

Aksoy’s fourth place overall also secured another Rookie victory, ahead of Craigie and Oscar Repetto. Roman Kamyab finished 13th overall and fourth among the Rookies, while Florentin Hattemer and Knud Nielsen completed the top six in the Rookie classification.

Ginevra Panzeri finished 28th overall and claimed victory in the Women’s Trophy, adding another positive result for PA Racing in the final race of the weekend.

Sammalisto closes the gap in the championship

The Final completed a near-perfect Vallelunga weekend for Sammalisto. He won all three races he contested, added the fastest lap in the Final, and moved firmly into title contention.

Aksoy’s consistency kept him at the top of the Drivers’ Championship, but Sammalisto’s hat-trick reduced the gap to just six points. Robinson’s victory and two second-place finishes also moved him into the championship fight, while Cosma-Cristofor recovered strongly from his Race 1 penalty with two confirmed podiums across the rest of the weekend.

For US Racing, Vallelunga was the clearest statement yet. Sammalisto, Robinson, Savinkov, Bansal, Kräling and Busso all contributed strong results, giving the team control of the weekend and major momentum heading towards Monza.

Conclusion: US Racing turns Vallelunga into a statement weekend

Vallelunga marked a major shift in the early shape of the 2026 Italian F4 Championship. PREMA Racing still leaves Round 2 with Alp Aksoy leading both the Drivers’ Championship and Rookie Championship, but US Racing was the clear benchmark across the weekend.

Luka Sammalisto delivered the defining performance of the round. The Finnish driver won Race 1, Race 3 and the Final, completing a perfect three-from-three weekend and cutting Aksoy’s championship lead to just six points. What had looked like an early PREMA advantage after Misano is now a much closer title fight heading to Monza.

Edward Robinson also emerged as one of the biggest winners from Vallelunga. After taking double pole and claiming victory in Race 2, the Spanish-British driver added two second-place finishes and moved firmly into championship contention. Combined with strong results from Oleksandr Savinkov, Ary Bansal, Arjen Kräling, Ludovico Busso and Noah Killion, US Racing also took control of the Teams’ Championship.

For PREMA Racing, the weekend was more mixed. Aksoy’s consistency remained crucial, while David Cosma-Cristofor showed strong pace and recovered well after his Race 1 penalty. However, incidents and lost opportunities for Niccolò Maccagnani, Christian Costoya and others allowed US Racing to build momentum.

Behind the leading teams, David Walther continued to underline Maffi Racing’s competitiveness, Kenzo Craigie produced one of the best Rookie drives of the weekend, and Ginevra Panzeri took an important Women’s Trophy victory in the Final.

With Aksoy still leading, Sammalisto charging, Robinson now established as a title threat and US Racing carrying the strongest momentum, the championship heads to Monza with the battle at the front significantly closer than it was after the season opener.
