Łyżeń wins twice at Portimão as Schormans takes Race 3, cutting Coronel’s Spanish F4 lead to five points.

The 2026 Spanish F4 Championship continued with a chaotic second round at Portimão, where safety cars, red flags, penalties and late-race incidents reshaped the weekend. After dominating the season opener at Valencia, Rocco Coronel still left Portugal with the championship lead. However, his advantage was reduced significantly as Łyżeń and Schormans closed in.

Łyżeń was the major winner of the weekend. He claimed Race 1 after surviving a heavily interrupted contest, then passed Noah Monteiro to win Race 2 and complete a Saturday double. Schormans then added more momentum for MP Motorsport on Sunday, inheriting Race 3 victory after Túñon and Petrović were handed 30-second penalties for falling more than five car lengths behind the safety car at the restart.

As a result, Coronel leads the drivers’ standings on 76 points, but Schormans is now only four points behind on 72, while Łyżeń sits third on 71. Therefore, the championship battle leaves Portimão far tighter than it looked after the opening round.

2026 Spanish F4: Portimão: Qualifying 1: Micallef takes maiden pole by 0.006s

Jacob Micallef began the weekend in style by taking his maiden Spanish F4 pole position. The Campos Racing rookie set a 1:45.073, beating Łyżeń by just 0.006s. Monteiro completed the top three, only 0.037s off pole, which immediately showed how close the field was around Portimão.

That Qualifying result gave Micallef track position for Race 1. However, Łyżeń and Monteiro were close enough to attack immediately, while Tye, Schormans, Fisher and Kanthan also placed themselves near the front. Coronel, meanwhile, qualified 11th, leaving the championship leader with significant work to do.

2026 Spanish F4: Portimão: Race 1: Łyżeń wins after red flag and safety car chaos

Race 1 quickly turned against polesitter Micallef. Although he started from the front, he fell behind Łyżeń, Monteiro and Tye in the opening stages. Soon after, Jorden Moodley crashed into the stopped Luna Fluxá, who had spun exiting Turn 13. That brought out the safety car before the red flag was flown on lap four.

After a 20-minute delay and a lap behind the safety car, Łyżeń led the field back to green ahead of Monteiro and Tye. However, the restart immediately produced more drama. Micallef suffered a puncture heading into Turn 1, while Daniel Kelleher spun Elliot Kaczynski into Miki Blascos’ right-rear corner at Turn 5, forcing Blascos to stop at Turn 10.

That incident triggered another safety car, before Louis Cochet’s collision with Andre Rodriguez at Turn 5 caused a further interruption on lap 15. The race eventually came down to a one-lap shootout, which Łyżeń completed unchallenged to take victory. Tye finished second, while Schormans completed the podium.

The fight behind them also ended in chaos. Kelleher hit Túñon at Turn 10, who then tagged T-Code teammate Petrović and flipped him into the gravel. Petrović escaped injury, while Kelleher received a 10-second post-race penalty.

2026 Spanish F4: Portimão: Race 2: Łyżeń passes Monteiro to complete Saturday double

Race 2 gave Monteiro the chance to respond from pole. He defended from Łyżeń through the opening corners, but the race was soon neutralised after a collision involving Sam Urus and Dani Mota brought out the safety car.

When racing resumed at the end of lap two, Łyżeń immediately resumed his attack. The KCL Motorsport driver kept pressure on Monteiro and eventually made the decisive move three laps later through Turn 14. From there, he controlled the race and moved towards a second victory of the weekend.

The safety car appeared again when Beau Lowette became stranded at Turn 4 after contact with Simón Bulbarella and Yuzuki Sato. Under the safety car, Sato then crashed into the back of Pablo Riccobono Bello, eliminating both drivers.

The race restarted with two laps remaining. Petrović, who had climbed from sixth to third, immediately passed Monteiro on the main straight for second place. However, he could not catch Łyżeń, who secured his second win from two races.

2026 Spanish F4: Portimão: Qualifying 2: Petrović leads T-Code front-row lockout

On Sunday, T-Code delivered its strongest Qualifying performance of the weekend. Petrović took pole with a 1:45.305, while teammate Túñon secured second, only 0.007s behind. Monteiro completed the top three, just 0.020s off pole.

The result gave T-Code a golden opportunity for Race 3. However, Schormans, Tye, Łyżeń, Fisher and Coronel all remained close enough to benefit from any disruption, with the top eight covered by just over two tenths.

2026 Spanish F4: Portimão: Race 3: Schormans inherits victory after T-Code penalties

Race 3 initially looked set to belong to T-Code. Petrović started from pole, with Túñon alongside him, and the pair controlled the race after an early red flag. That stoppage came after Łyżeń spun Tye, who became beached at Turn 3.

After a 15-minute delay and two safety car laps, Petrović and Túñon built a small gap over the chasing pack. Túñon then pressured his teammate and eventually took the lead down the inside of Turn 5 on lap 10. At that stage, T-Code appeared to be on course for a one-two finish.

However, the race was interrupted again. First, Alfons Miettinen suffered terminal damage after colliding with teammate Andre Rodriguez at Turn 5. Then, on lap 13, Jean-Paul Karras suffered a front-left suspension failure and went into the Turn 1 gravel.

That produced another one-lap shootout. Schormans battled with a group of Campos cars for third and came through to complete the podium on the road behind Túñon and Petrović. However, both T-Code drivers were later found to have fallen more than five car lengths behind the safety car at the restart. They received 30-second penalties and dropped to 25th and 26th.

As a result, Schormans inherited victory, Miki Blascos claimed a maiden podium in second, and Coronel rose to third. That result was crucial for the championship, as it allowed Coronel to limit the damage from a difficult weekend.

Drivers’ Standings after Round 2: Coronel leads, but Schormans and Łyżeń close in

After six races, Coronel remains at the top of the drivers’ standings. However, his advantage has been reduced sharply. He finished only 25th in Race 1, recovered to fifth in Race 2 and then inherited third in Race 3.

Schormans is now second after another consistent weekend and his inherited Sunday victory. Łyżeń sits third, just one point behind Schormans, after taking two wins at Portimão. Therefore, only five points cover the top three drivers heading into the next round.

Teams’ Standings after Round 2: MP Motorsport pulls clear

MP Motorsport leaves Portimão with a commanding lead in the teams’ championship. Coronel and Schormans both scored important points, while Schormans’ Race 3 victory strengthened the team’s position further.

Griffin Core by Campos remains second, but KCL by MP is now only two points behind after Łyżeń’s double victory. T-Code could have gained significant ground with a Race 3 one-two, but the penalties for Túñon and Petrović proved costly.

Conclusion

In the end, Portimão changed the shape of the Spanish F4 championship. Coronel still leads, but his advantage is no longer comfortable. A difficult Race 1 and only one podium from the weekend allowed both Schormans and Łyżeń to close in.

Łyżeń produced the defining performance of the round. His two Saturday wins moved him from the chasing pack into genuine title contention. Schormans also strengthened his position with consistent scoring and an inherited victory in Race 3, while MP Motorsport extended its teams’ championship lead.

T-Code, meanwhile, left Portugal with mixed emotions. Petrović and Túñon had the speed to dominate Sunday, but their post-race penalties erased a likely one-two finish. Therefore, after a weekend full of incidents and reshuffled results, Spanish F4 heads to the next round with three drivers separated by just five points.
