Ford Hypercar reaches major milestone with first Coyote V8 fire-up ahead of 2027 WEC entry

Ford fires up its WEC Hypercar Coyote V8 for the first time as testing nears and programme enters a crucial new phase ahead of 2027 entry.

Ford has successfully fired up its FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) Hypercar engine inside the prototype chassis for the first time, as they prepare for their 2027 entry. The American manufacturer integrated its naturally aspirated 5.4-litre Coyote V8 with the ORECA-developed chassis and hybrid system before completing the fire-up at ORECA’s base in southern France.

The milestone moves Ford closer to its planned 2027 Hypercar debut and the start of an extensive track-testing programme. The marque will enter two cars as it targets outright success at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the FIA WEC manufacturers’ title.

Ford completes months of engine and chassis integration ahead of 2026 WEC Hypercar entry

Ford designed and built the Coyote V8 at its Michigan headquarters before testing the engine extensively on dynamometers in Dearborn. At the same time, ORECA continued developing the chassis in France. The two workstreams came together when Ford installed the powertrain into the car and fired it up alongside the hybrid system.

Ford Racing FIA WEC Hypercar Programme Manager Dan Sayers, while speaking to FIAWEC.com, described the moment as one of the project’s most important achievements.

“This was the culmination of months of painstaking work,” acknowledged Sayers. “It was one of our most significant milestones to-date, and as I reflect upon the journey to this point, I’m proud of the groundwork that was laid long before the engine ever turned over.

“Its development is already showing great promise on the dynos in Dearborn, where we’ve been pushing the limits of performance and durability and learning a lot at the same time. That dyno work, combined with parallel progress on the chassis side with ORECA, has now converged into a complete package ready for the next phase.

Ford will now use the complete prototype to validate the connection between the engine, chassis and hybrid components before it begins accumulating track mileage.

Ford has retained responsibility for every aspect of the Hypercar’s engine programme. Through that approach, the manufacturer aims to respond quickly to technical challenges and apply lessons from the racing project to its road-going performance vehicles.

Sayers explained that the first fire-up provided an important technical validation rather than merely a symbolic moment for the programme.

“The firing of the engine is more than a symbolic moment – it’s a critical validation step. We are doing everything from an engine perspective in-house and we’re doing that because we can react faster, learn faster and bring that back to the production side of the business. [The engine] serves as a direct link to Ford’s production performance vehicles as well as accelerating the transfer of technology between the racetrack and the road.

The Hypercar programme therefore gives Ford an opportunity to develop racing technology while strengthening the connection between its competition and production departments.

Coyote V8 comes to life inside ORECA chassis as Ford prepares for 2027 WEC Hypercar entry

The successful fire-up confirmed that Ford and ORECA had completed the initial integration phase between the powertrain and chassis. Engineers had previously operated the V8 inside controlled dyno environments. However, running it inside the complete prototype allowed the teams to assess the systems in their intended configuration for the first time.

Sayers welcomed the progress but acknowledged the substantial development programme that still lies ahead.

“Hearing the Coyote V8 come alive within its intended home for the first time confirmed that months of integration work between the powertrain and chassis teams have paid off. Looking ahead, we have a lot of laps to turn later this year, but the work has already started and I’m excited for what’s ahead.”

Ford will now shift its focus from assembly and initial systems checks towards track-based development.

European testing programme to begin next month

Ford plans to begin a comprehensive testing schedule at several European circuits next month. The manufacturer will later expand the programme to the United States as it prepares the car for the varied demands of the FIA WEC calendar.

Engineers will assess performance, reliability, aerodynamic behaviour and hybrid-system integration. They will also aim to recreate the different conditions that the team could encounter during a championship race weekend.

The testing programme will provide Ford with its first opportunity to compare simulation data and dyno results with the car’s behaviour on a circuit.

Six-driver line-up to guide Hypercar development

Ford has already confirmed Logan Sargeant, Mike Rockenfeller, Sebastian Priaulx, Matt Campbell, Tom Blomqvist and Nick Yelloly for its Hypercar programme.

All six drivers will contribute feedback as Ford moves from virtual development and controlled testing into full circuit running. Their input will help engineers understand the car’s balance, drivability and behaviour across different track conditions. Sayers expects that feedback to play a critical role throughout the coming months.

“Of course it’s early days, and we have a huge amount of work ahead of us, but the sim work and dyno numbers give us a great foundation,” the Brit reported. “Still, there’s no substitute for what the drivers feel through the wheel and seat once we’re actually out on-track – that feedback loop is what will truly sharpen this car over the upcoming months.

The manufacturer must now turn its early technical promise into a reliable and competitive race package.

Ford enters most consequential phase of WEC project

Ford will return to the highest level of endurance racing almost six decades after the GT40 delivered the marque’s most recent outright Le Mans victory.

The manufacturer will join an expanding Hypercar field alongside fellow incoming entrant McLaren in 2027. It will compete with two ORECA-based prototypes powered by its in-house Coyote V8.

Although the first fire-up represents an important step, track testing will provide a more demanding assessment of the complete car. Sayers believes the approaching circuit debut marks the beginning of the project’s most important period so far.

“With the engine now firing within the chassis and a circuit debut just weeks away, our Hypercar programme is entering its most visible and consequential phase yet – one that brings Ford Racing another step closer to its ultimate ambition.”

Ford will now begin building mileage, refining the prototype and addressing the technical challenges that emerge during testing. Those preparations will determine how effectively the manufacturer can challenge for victories when it joins the FIA WEC Hypercar grid in 2027.
