Tuukka Taponen heads into the next phase of the 2026 FIA F3 season determined to bounce back from a disappointing opening round in Melbourne. The MP Motorsport driver endured a difficult start to the campaign after qualifying 14th at Albert Park and missing out on points in both races.

Although the Finnish driver gained positions during the Sprint and Feature Races, he ultimately finished 12th and 13th respectively. As a result, the opening weekend fell well below the expectations that both Taponen and MP Motorsport carried into the season.

However, the Ferrari Driver Academy member now believes the upcoming European rounds present the perfect opportunity to reset momentum and return to the front of the field.

A busy period away from racing

Following the Melbourne weekend, Taponen used the break between rounds to recharge and continue his development away from the circuit. The 19-year-old completed his military service before returning to training and preparation with Ferrari and MP Motorsport.

“So first after Melbourne I finished my military service which was I was happy to finish it, even it was quite a nice experience afterwards,” he said to Formula 3. “Then I had one or two weeks like to rest, then we did the training camp together with other Ferrari drivers in Rome. After that I did some physical and mental assessment in Maranello, again with Ferrari.”

In addition, Taponen spent time in the simulator with MP Motorsport as the team worked to understand the issues that affected their Melbourne performance.

“After that I went to the sim with MP and then went to see my father racing, he did the one race in Finland, a low level but still good.”

The period away from competition allowed Taponen to reset mentally while maintaining focus on the demanding European stretch ahead.

Spielberg test provides encouragement for Taponen and MP Motorsport ahead of 2026 F3 resumption in Monaco

Taponen returned to the cockpit for the in-season test at Spielberg and immediately showed encouraging pace. He finished second fastest on Day 1 and fourth on Day 2, giving both driver and team a much-needed confidence boost. The strong results also helped MP Motorsport analyse the shortcomings from Melbourne while trialling new ideas ahead of Round 2.

Taponen admitted the opening weekend had been difficult to accept given the expectations within the team.

“Melbourne was very shocking for all of us because we thought we are going to be up there in the front but it was not the case and it was very, very hard to swallow.”

Nevertheless, the Spielberg test suggested the team may already have identified areas for improvement as the championship moves into Europe.

Monte Carlo offers fresh opportunity

Taponen now turns his attention to Monte Carlo, where he hopes to begin a positive run through the busiest section of the calendar. The upcoming schedule includes six race weekends in just two months, creating little time to dwell on setbacks.

“It’s going to be busy two months, six weekends in two months is quite a good speed, good rhythm,” said Taponen.

The iconic streets of Monaco will provide a unique challenge for every driver on the grid. However, Taponen sees the event as the ideal place to reignite his campaign.

“Monaco is going to be a special track but let’s try and let’s hope that I and we can turn the momentum there around and from this point onwards it will be a good championship.”

Focus turns to consistency and confidence

Beyond Monte Carlo, Taponen believes the more traditional European circuits could allow MP Motorsport to rediscover the form they expected before the season began. The Finnish driver remains confident that improved rhythm, stronger communication with the team and renewed confidence can quickly move him back into contention near the front.

“After Monaco will be kind of normal tracks, so we will try to get a good momentum, get the good feeling with the team and the confidence back and fight at the top again.”

With encouraging pace from the Spielberg test and a fresh run of European races approaching, Taponen now hopes Monte Carlo will mark the beginning of his F3 recovery.
