Sheldon van der Linde believes BMW M Team WRT heads into the 2026 24 Hours of Le Mans with confidence at an all-time high following the manufacturer’s landmark victory at Spa-Francorchamps.
BMW secured a memorable one-two finish in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) round in Belgium last month, with the #20 M Hybrid V8 shared by van der Linde, René Rast and Robin Frijns leading home the sister #15 machine driven by Kevin Magnussen, Dries Vanthoor and Raffaele Marciello.
As a result, BMW moved to the top of both the Drivers’ and Manufacturers’ standings, strengthening belief within the team ahead of endurance racing’s most prestigious event. Importantly, the breakthrough success arrived just weeks before Le Mans, providing a significant morale boost as the Bavarian marque prepares for one of the biggest challenges in motorsport.
BMW building 2026 WEC momentum at the perfect time
The timing of BMW’s victory could hardly have been better. Despite showing flashes of potential since entering the Hypercar category, the M Hybrid V8 has yet to achieve a major result at Le Mans, recording a best finish of only 17th in its previous two appearances.
BMW’s most recent top-class podium at the French endurance classic remains its famous overall victory in 1999, making this year’s event another opportunity to end a lengthy wait for success. Consequently, the Spa triumph has generated fresh optimism throughout the Belgian-based WRT operation.
Van der Linde believes the team has all the ingredients required to carry that momentum into the race at La Sarthe.
Speaking to FIAWEC, he said, “Momentum is gold in motorsport, and that’s what we have right now. I expect our updated BMW M Hybrid V8 to be a big asset in terms of performance, especially around a track like this.”
The South African racer feels the latest developments made to BMW’s Hypercar programme could prove particularly effective around the high-speed Le Mans circuit.
Special Le Mans BMW livery unveiled ahead of 2026 Le Mans
In addition to its competitive ambitions, BMW will arrive at Le Mans with a striking new appearance for the #20 machine. Developed alongside Premium Technology Partner Shell, the special red, yellow and white livery carries the slogan ‘100% Power, Always at Your Command’ and will feature throughout the iconic twice-around-the-clock contest.
For van der Linde, the design also carries personal significance due to its resemblance to a successful chapter of his career in touring car racing. Reflecting on the new look, he highlighted the connection between his previous achievements and BMW’s recent breakthrough victory at Spa.
“Our car looks incredible in its special livery,” enthused FIA WEC’s first South African race-winner. “It reminds me very much of my DTM car in 2024. I’ve had so much success together with Shell in the DTM, and it felt like history repeating itself with the Spa victory in a Shell car. This livery for Le Mans is another milestone in our partnership.”
The fresh design will ensure the #20 BMW stands out on track as it seeks to add another memorable chapter to the manufacturer’s endurance racing history.
Team spirit driving ambition
Beyond the performance gains and visual changes, van der Linde believes the collective mindset within BMW M Team WRT could prove equally important over the demanding 24-hour race. The Spa result reinforced confidence throughout the organisation and strengthened belief that BMW can compete with the leading contenders at Le Mans.
According to the South African, motivation levels across the team are exceptionally high as preparations enter their final phase.
“Everyone is super-motivated and in the best possible spirit going into the event. We hope to be able to convert that into our first Le Mans podium – and maybe even fight for the win.”
Those comments underline the growing confidence within the BMW camp after one of the most successful weekends in the programme’s recent history.
BMW sets eyes on a historic result
Le Mans has remained an elusive target for BMW since its return to top-level prototype racing, but the landscape appears markedly different heading into the 2026 edition. The combination of an updated M Hybrid V8, championship-leading momentum and a team buoyed by recent success has created genuine optimism that the manufacturer can challenge at the front.
While securing a first outright podium in nearly three decades would represent a significant achievement, van der Linde and his teammates are aiming even higher. After making history at Spa, BMW now arrives at Le Mans believing it can transform momentum into another landmark result and potentially challenge for overall victory at endurance racing’s greatest race.
