After an unpredictable Qualifying session, Jake Dennis started from pole alongside his Andretti teammate Felipe Drugovich. Championship leader Mitch Evans lined up P3 as Dan Ticktum started P4 and Nyck De Vries completed the top five.

Notably, four drivers carried grid penalties into the Sanya E-Prix following incidents at the Monaco E-Prix. Taylor Barnard, who originally qualified fifth, dropped to P14 after receiving a combined 10-place grid penalty for separate collisions with Norman Nato and Jean-Éric Vergne. DS Penske teammate Maximilian Günther also received a 3-place grid drop for exceeding the speed limit under Full Course Yellow conditions.

Further back, Lucas di Grassi started from P20 after changing both the MCU and gearbox following Monaco Qualifying, causing a 40-place grid penalty. Meanwhile, Pepe Martí dropped from P14 to P18 on the grid as he served a 5-place grid penalty for forcing Nick Cassidy off track during the Monaco E-Prix.

Lights out for the Formula E Sanya E-Prix race

As the five lights went out, Dennis got off to a strong start, while De Vries dropped down from P5 to P9. As Dennis and Drugovich battled at the front, Evans was under pressure from Pascal Wehrlein. Wehrlein soon managed to get past Evans for P3 on Lap 7 before moving up and splitting the Andretti teammates.

Zane Maloney was the first driver to serve his first Attack Mode on Lap 9, charging through the field up to P3. Ticktum and António Félix Da Costa were the next drivers to take an early Attack Mode. Meanwhile, Edoardo Mortara suffered front-wing damage at Turn 9.

As drivers in Attack Mode constantly swapped the race lead, Ticktum collided with the rear of Evans, causing Ticktum to lose his front wing.

Red flag on Lap 19

Drama struck on Lap 19 as Evans and Maloney interlocked at the hairpin, stopping several other drivers behind. The incident triggered an immediate red flag, allowing teams to quickly repair their cars in the pit lane. Unfortunately, the FIA soon announced that Evans couldn’t rejoin the grid unless his rear wing was replaced, dropping him to the back of the field. The 2026 Formula E Sanya E-Prix race resumed at 15:46 local time with a standing start.

Dennis lined up in P1 alongside Drugovich, as Wehrlein and Eriksson started from the second row. At lights out, Dennis got off to another strong start, as Wehrlein served his second Attack Mode on the following lap.

Cassidy briefly entered the pit lane with a technical issue on his Citroën Racing car before continuing his race. Da Costa took a first late Attack Mode on Lap 26, making his way up to P1 as Mortara retired.

Final moments

With 10 laps remaining, Norman Nato triggered a Full Course Yellow after colliding with the wall at Turn 3 following contact with Wehrlein. More drama arrived at the race restart, as race leader Da Costa received a five-second time penalty for an earlier collision at Turn 6, while Wehrlein was handed a five-second penalty for causing the collision with Nato.

Taking his second Attack Mode, Rowland charged to the top as Dennis activated his final Attack Mode on Lap 32. Dennis soon regained the race lead with an energy advantage and 1:35s of Attack Mode remaining. After several incidents, Race Control added two laps.

A second Full Course Yellow was brought out as Rowland found the wall on the penultimate lap. However, finishing under green-flag conditions, Jake Dennis claimed victory in an Andretti 1-2, with Pepe Martí completing the podium.
