Leo Robinson, a young British-Algerian racing driver, has been making waves in the motorsport world with his remarkable progression from karting to car racing. Known for his resilience and adaptability, Leo has already garnered attention at multiple levels of competition, including Formula 4 and sports car racing. In an exclusive interview with Pit Debrief, Robinson reflected on his early career, what drives him and the lessons he has learned along the way.
Early beginnings: From karting to the track
Robinson’s love for motorsport was sparked at a very young age. It all began with his family’s weekly tradition of heading to the track. For Robinson, racing was not just a hobby—it became a way of life. This routine, which started when he was just five years old, laid the foundation for his deep commitment to the sport.
“We used to go out every single weekend, so it was just a part of life, to be honest. We used to go out every single Saturday morning to Rye House to go on the track when I was five years old, and that carried on for many, many years.”
For Robinson, karting was more than just an activity; it was woven into the fabric of his childhood. His early exposure to the track cultivated not only his passion for racing but also his natural competitive spirit. By the age of seven, Robinson had already achieved success, becoming a karting champion. However, despite the accolades, his focus was never just on winning. Karting, for him, was about enjoying the journey and honing his craft—long before the pressure of competition began to take hold.
Representing more than just himself
As a driver with both British and Algerian heritage, Robinson’s identity plays an important role in his racing career. He takes immense pride in representing Algeria, and while it is not always at the forefront of his racing mindset, it influences his approach to the sport.
“I’m half-half. My dad’s English, my mum’s Algerian, so I choose to represent Algeria. It’s my country, so I feel proud every time I go out on the track and represent my country. But at the end of the day, I just want to win.”
For Robinson, national pride is important, but his core motivation remains rooted in personal success. The balance between representing Algeria and pursuing his individual goals has helped him stay focused amidst the challenges of motorsport.

Lessons from karting: resilience and perspective
Karting was not without its ups and downs, and Robinson learned early on that resilience was key to success. Motorsport, like life, is full of good weekends and bad weekends, and it is how a person bounces back from setbacks that truly defines them.
“Yeah, definitely,” he replied when asked if lessons from his karting days still shaped his current approach to racing. “Like most things in karting, I think that the most important thing is sometimes you have good weekends, sometimes you have bad weekends. But you just have to keep on going. There will still be good and bad weekends in the future.”
This mentality became a cornerstone of Robinson’s mindset, teaching him to focus on the long-term journey rather than getting bogged down by short-term disappointments.
“If you have a bad weekend, just don’t worry about it and just move on. And if you have a good weekend, that’s great. It’s still good for the world.”
Robinson’s approach to racing has always been about taking things as they come—whether he was winning or losing, he understood that both experiences were part of his development.
“Some things don’t go your way, so you just have to move on and look forward to the next thing. I think that’s half the part of it.”
This resilience would become invaluable as he made the transition to car racing, where the stakes were even higher and the challenges greater.
Reflecting on the early days
When Robinson looks back at his younger self, he’s proud of the way he navigated his early racing years. Rather than giving advice to his past self, he believes his initial approach to the sport was already sound.
“I wouldn’t really say much, to be honest,” he said when asked about the advice that he would give to his younger self. “He already had it pretty up in control. So, yeah, I’d have to say, “Just keep on going. Just stay strong.”“
For Robinson, the journey was not about achieving perfection—it was about persevering, regardless of the challenges. His early experiences taught him to push through adversity and keep moving forward.
A story of resilience and passion
Leo Robinson’s journey through the ranks of motorsport is a compelling story of resilience, passion, and relentless self-improvement. From his early days in karting to his current endeavours in Formula 4 and sports car racing, Leo has demonstrated that true success isn’t just about winning—it’s about persevering through both triumphs and setbacks. His ability to adapt, his dedication to constant learning, and his commitment to representing his heritage are qualities that set him apart as a rising star in the motorsport world.
As he continues to climb the motorsport ladder, Robinson remains grounded in his desire to improve and achieve greater success. With his eyes set on future championships and his unwavering focus on growth, Leo’s career is one to watch as he moves toward even bigger challenges ahead.
