Woohyun Shin, also known as Michael Shin, says he is eager to continue learning and building experience as he prepares for a return to F3 action in Monaco following a disrupted start to the 2026 season.

The Hitech driver missed pre-season testing because of a shoulder injury and entered the opening round in Melbourne without full physical preparation. However, after returning home to South Korea following Round 1, Shin underwent surgery and focused on regaining full fitness ahead of the demanding European section of the campaign.

Now fully recovered and back in the cockpit during the in-season test at Spielberg, the 21-year-old believes the upcoming rounds provide an important opportunity to generate momentum and continue adapting to life in Formula 3.

Recovery period helps Shin reset ahead of 2026 F3 resumption in Monaco

After a challenging start to the season, Shin explained that he used the break following Melbourne in a productive way while continuing his recovery process.

“I’ve been doing very well,” said Shin to Formula 3. “I went back to Korea, had to get a bit of surgery done, but otherwise been very productive, using my time wisely.”

The time away from competition allowed the Hitech driver to focus on both his physical rehabilitation and preparation for the intense stretch of races ahead. With several rounds arriving in quick succession, returning at full fitness became an important priority for the South Korean driver. Therefore, although the injury interrupted his preparations before the season began, Shin remains determined to maximise every opportunity during his F3 campaign.

Melbourne provides valuable experience

Looking back on the opening 2026 F3 round in Australia, Shin admitted that the Melbourne weekend felt more like a learning exercise than a fully competitive outing due to his physical condition. However, despite the difficult circumstances, Shin still viewed the weekend positively because it allowed him to gain valuable mileage and experience in Formula 3 machinery.

“For me, Melbourne was really like a warmup, I guess,” he continued. “I knew I wasn’t fully there physically. But it was just about going out there, getting the experience and having fun, and I think I did that.

The Feature Race ended in disappointment after an incident forced him out, but Shin accepted the setback as part of the learning process young drivers often face early in their careers.

“You know, it’s a shame I crashed out in the Feature Race, but these things happen.”

Importantly, the Melbourne round gave Shin a clearer understanding of the physical and technical demands required at Formula 3 level.

Spielberg F3 test provides important preparation for Shin ahead of Monaco

Ahead of the next round in Monaco, Shin returned to action during the 2026 F3 in-season test in Spielberg, where he completed 150 laps across two productive days with Hitech.

The extensive running gave the South Korean valuable track time after missing pre-season testing earlier in the year. More importantly, it allowed him to rebuild confidence and continue adjusting to the F3 car before entering one of the most demanding events on the calendar.

“I am really excited now that I’m fully back,” he said. “I can’t wait to get going again. There is honestly no better place to start than Monaco. It’s going to be very challenging.”

The Monte Carlo circuit will represent another major milestone in Shin’s development because it will also mark his first experience racing on a street track.

“It’s my first street circuit ever, and it’s renowned for being quite the drivers’ track, especially in Qualifying. So we’ll see how it goes.”

The narrow barriers, limited overtaking opportunities and high-pressure Qualifying sessions make Monaco one of the most demanding weekends of the Formula 3 season. Consequently, Shin understands that expectations must remain realistic as he continues gaining experience. For that reason, Shin believes the in-season test in Austria arrived at the perfect moment before the start of a very busy race schedule.

“Obviously, to get going straight away at Monaco would be quite a big step. So having the in-season test is going to be very useful for me. We also have a really busy period of the season, with six rounds in eight weeks.”

That intense calendar will test both drivers and teams physically and mentally throughout the European campaign.

Learning remains the main priority

Despite the pressure that naturally comes with competing in Formula 3, Shin insisted that results are not currently his main focus. Instead, the Hitech driver wants to maximise his learning process during his first full season in F3. Therefore, rather than placing unnecessary pressure on immediate results, the South Korean remains open-minded about whatever challenges may come his way in Monte Carlo and beyond.

“For me, it doesn’t really matter whether it’s a good or bad weekend, as long as I always learn something. It’s my first year in F3, so it’s all about finishing those races and getting those experience laps in. So I’m really open to however it goes and I’m ready to deal with it.”

With his recovery now complete and valuable testing mileage added before Monaco, Shin heads into the next stage of the 2026 F3 season determined to continue learning and building confidence with every lap.
