In an exclusive interview with Pit Debrief, Emmilio Valentino Del Grosso shared candid insights into the challenges he faces as a young racing driver and how he navigates the mental and physical demands of motorsport. Known for his disciplined approach, Del Grosso reflected on the lessons learned from setbacks, the importance of recovery, and the role of a strong support system in sustaining a promising career. His perspective provides a rare glimpse into the mindset that drives performance at the highest levels.
Del Grosso on handling setbacks with perspective
Setbacks form an unavoidable part of any racing career, particularly in the highly competitive world of motorsport. For Del Grosso, these moments have not only tested his resolve but also played a key role in shaping his mental approach to the sport. Over time, he has learned to process difficult weekends more effectively and to shift his focus quickly towards future opportunities.
“So, I’ve struggled with setbacks in the past, but I’ve learned a lot from those moments, and now I’m much better at handling them and moving forward quickly. So, for example, when I have a bad weekend, I just remind myself that there will be other opportunities. There’s never a point where you’ll, you’ll be stuck. You know, there’s always room for improvement, and there’s always room for other chances.”
By reinforcing this perspective, Del Grosso avoids becoming mentally trapped by a single result. Instead, he frames each race as part of a much larger process, allowing him to maintain consistency in both performance and mindset.
“And this is something that stays with me a lot, this mentality. Because I know how easy it can be to get stuck and to feel stuck. But once you realise that there will come another race, there will be another chance where you can prove yourself, there will be another chance where you can go for the race, then you just have to understand that you can fail at the [initial] objective.”
Importantly, he does not simply tolerate setbacks—he actively values them. In a sport defined by fine margins and constant evaluation, he recognises that difficult moments often provide the clearest opportunities for growth.
“But I honestly think that setbacks are nice to have, because without them, you cannot improve. It’s really important.”
The value of physical training and recovery
While mindset plays a crucial role, Del Grosso places equal importance on physical preparation. Motorsport demands sustained concentration, endurance, and the ability to perform under physical stress, particularly across long race weekends and extended seasons. As a result, his training routine reflects a deliberate and structured approach to building strength and stamina.
“Well, I train. I just love to train my cardio, either with running, or I go a lot to the gym to train core. Core is very important as well. I try to do a lot of calisthenics with my body.”
However, Del Grosso is equally aware that performance cannot be sustained through training alone. Recovery, in his view, is not a secondary consideration but a fundamental component of preparation. By prioritising rest and recovery, he ensures that his body can consistently meet the demands placed upon it.
“Recovery is very important for me. I’m very dedicated. I spend a lot of time researching my sleep and how I recover. So, for me, it’s very important, especially the recovery side, because without recovery, you cannot train. So, sleeping well, staying hydrated, and all of that is, is so important. That’s how I avoid burnout.”
This balanced approach allows him to maintain a high level of performance over time, reducing the risk of burnout while maximising both physical and mental sharpness.

The role of a strong support system
Alongside personal discipline, Del Grosso credits his support system as a critical factor in his progression. Motorsport presents unique pressures, both on and off the track, and having the right people in place can significantly influence a driver’s ability to manage those demands.
“Well, it’s been an important, important part of my career, especially for the off-track pressure and stuff like this.”
He has deliberately built a network of individuals who contribute not only to his professional development but also to his overall well-being. This includes experienced figures within the sport who provide guidance, structure, and stability.
“Well, I surround myself with capable people through my career. Like [my manager] Sebastian [Danicska] has, for me, a really important role in my career. And having the right people around you is also extremely important in motorsport.”
Beyond professional expertise, Del Grosso highlights the importance of trust, emotional understanding, and shared values within his inner circle. These elements help create an environment in which he can perform with clarity and confidence.
“So, I always try to surround myself with the people that have the best interest for me in mind. This is my way in motorsport: just having the right people and having the right feelings with the people. You know, also, there are the emotions that go through these things. It’s very important to, to manage these.”
This combination of technical support and emotional stability provides a foundation that enables him to navigate the highs and lows of competition effectively.
