Race 2 from IMS is in the books as round 4 of the 2025 Indy NXT season took place at the Sonsio GP, view the full report and results below. Lochie Hughes started on pole with championship leader Dennis Hauger alongside him on the front row once again.
The Australian won on Friday evening as Hauger recovered from a turn 1 incident to finish P8 and keep his championship lead by 3 points.
Hughes made a perfect start to race 2 at the Indy NXT Sonsio GP, holding off Hauger. Myles Rowe made an aggressive move into turn 4 on Collet to take P4, with de Alba following through a few corners later.
After losing spots to Pierson and Koolen, James Roe got hit in the rear by Missig as the American went side-by-side with Miller who ended up on the grass. Fortunately for the Irish driver he did not pick up any significant damage.
Miller would be involved in another incident on the next lap down at turn 1 as Allaer tagged him attempting a pass on the inside.
A caution was thrown as Allaer was stuck. Just before it, Jordan Missig took a trip through the grass at turn 7, falling to 14th.
Hughes, Hauger, Hedge, Rowe, de Alba, Collet, Pierson, Koolen, Roe and Sceats was the top 10 at that point. Miller went lap down, with Allaer going four down as he spent a lot of time in the pits.
On the restart, Hauger and Hughes went side-by-side into turns 1 and 2, with the championship leader going around the outside initially to get to the inside at the second corner. Rowe and de Alba overtook Callum Hedge as the Kiwi dropped to 5th. Meanwhile Papasavvas cleared Sceats for 10th.
As Escotto tried a move into turn 7, he had a big lock-up and somehow avoided Nikita Johnson as he found the grass. He fell to 17th.
Unfortunately for Papasavvas, a moment in turn 7 saw him take a bit of grass and dropped behind Sceats and Johnson.
Juan Manuel Correa was getting his elbows out, making a tidy pass into turn 1 on Missig for 14th. A few laps later in his latest adventure, Missig was seen recovering from the grass at turn 11, dropping to P19. A replay showed him spinning.
Sceats and Johnson cleared James Roe as changes took place at the bottom end of the top 10.
Constant pressure from Caio Collet finally paid off as he cleared Hedge with a tidy pass into turn one with 13 laps left. A lap later there was a fierce scrap between Hedge and Pierson as the New Zealander got his elbows out into turn 2 to hold position.
Tommy Smith was forced to stop in a safe spot over at turn 6 as a car issue ended his day early.
Hedge and Pierson went at it again big style with 10 laps remaining. The New Zealander defended into turn 1. Pierson attempted again into turn 7 but Hedge got the cutback. As Pierson tried again into turn 10, he locked up and ended up on the grass. With Hedge avoiding him, Koolen took advantage to gain two spots.
Hauger, Hughes, Rowe, de Alba, Collet, Koolen, Hedge, Sceats, Johnson and Pierson was the top 10 after that incredibly tough fight.
After clearing Sceats, Johnson forced Hedge into a reactive block. The New Zealander was forced to drop three spots because of it, falling behind Pierson who was irate with him.
Out front, Dennis Hauger put in a masterful drive. Managing his tyres in the first half of the race, he pulled away in the second part and won by almost 4.8s from teammate Lochie Hughes. Myles Rowe completed the podium.
