The Silverstone Round marked another significant step in Ugo Ugochukwu’s FIA Formula 3 (F3) title campaign, with the Campos Racing driver leaving the weekend having extended his championship advantage after one of the most memorable performances of the season.
After a difficult start to the weekend, Ugochukwu turned things around in spectacular fashion by claiming Sprint Race victory in dominant style. The American made F3 history by recording the largest winning margin the championship has ever seen, finishing more than 17 seconds clear of the field.
He backed that up with another strong drive in Sunday’s Feature Race. Starting 12th on the grid, Ugochukwu fought his way through the pack to cross the line in sixth before post-race penalties promoted him to third, capping off an impressive recovery and another valuable haul of championship points.
Speaking after the weekend, Ugochukwu reflected on how satisfying it was to bounce back after a challenging start.
Sprint Race success
Despite the commanding victory during the Silverstone F3 Sprint Race, Ugochukwu admitted he never expected to build such a significant advantage over the rest of the field.
“I feel good for sure, because it was a tricky start to the week, and that obviously makes it much sweeter, because we had to really work for it. Overall, yesterday was a very nice win to get, and it was a much easier win than I was expecting.”
The race quickly turned into a lesson in tyre management, with Campos Racing perfectly executing their strategy as Ugochukwu pulled away from the chasing pack.
“At the halfway point, my engineer told me to stop pushing, because that was such a big gap. I didn’t even realise how far I was into the lead, and I think we just kind of nailed the tyre management.
“We kept our tyres in a really good window, so I was really happy about the race pace.”
The result not only delivered maximum Sprint Race points but also etched Ugochukwu’s name into the Formula 3 record books with the largest winning margin in championship history.
Damage limitation turns into another podium
Sunday presented a very different challenge.
Ugochukwu lined up 12th for the Feature Race knowing that every championship point would matter.
Rather than chasing a risky result, the championship leader focused on limiting the damage while taking every opportunity that presented itself.
“Today, I knew it was kind of a case of damage limitation, so I tried to keep my nose clean, and just kind of get some good moves in, which we all managed to do.
“I think P6 is a really good points finish for the championship. It’s always risk versus reward with the move on Strømsted and Sharp, but I knew that was my chance and I had to take it.”
One of the defining moments of his race came when he overtook both Noah Strømsted and Louis Sharp in a single move at Turn 7, a manoeuvre that proved crucial in salvaging a strong result.
Ugochukwu explained that the race unfolded differently to what he had anticipated, with the leaders unable to break away and the field remaining tightly bunched in a lengthy DRS train.
“It was a bit of a strange race. The leaders’ pace wasn’t that quick, which meant everyone was in a DRS train, which made the overtaking a little bit harder, which I wasn’t expecting.
“So I knew I had to take those opportunities when they came. I was just in the right position to kind of take the place on the inside in T7. Two places in one lap was super good for the outcome of the race.”
Although he initially finished sixth on the road, post-race penalties elevated him to third, allowing him to leave Silverstone with another podium finish.
Eyes on Spa as title battle continues
With four rounds remaining in the season, Ugochukwu heads to Spa-Francorchamps still leading the championship.
While pleased with his position, the Campos Racing driver believes consistency will be the deciding factor as the title battle enters its final stages.
“I’m feeling pretty good. I enjoy Spa, it’s a good track. I think that the main thing is to be consistently there at the front.
“This weekend, we were just on the edge of that top 12, and it’s not easy in F3 because the field is getting closer every round, so you really need to be on top of your game because those last few tenths can really make a big difference.”
Looking ahead, Ugochukwu hopes a stronger start to the weekend will allow him to maximise his chances from the outset.
“We’ll try to stay on top of things and hopefully hit the ground running a little bit better in practice, and then we can attack the weekend from there. Still four rounds to go, so we still need to focus race by race.
“Once we get closer to the end of the season, we’ll see where we end up.”
After a record-breaking Sprint Race victory and an impressive Feature Race recovery, Silverstone may prove to be one of the defining weekends of Ugochukwu’s championship campaign as Formula 3 heads to the high-speed challenge of Spa-Francorchamps.
